Question PC randomly not recognizing USB devices after reboot

So I recently build a new PC and everything was fine for a day or 2 when suddenly my microphone seemed to stop working after booting up my PC. After reconnecting it worked fine again. This kept on happening every 6th reboot or so and eventually it happened more often with my other peripherals as well but it tends to mainly target my microphone maybe because that's the only wired USB device that's plugged in but I don't know for sure since it's also happened with my wireless mouse and keyboard which use the 2.5ghz dongle.

I tried everything to my knowledge to fix the issue:
  • Updated all of the USB drivers in the device manager.
  • Updated the BIOS.
  • Disabled USB selective suspend.
  • Turned off FastBoot everywhere
  • I tried the SFC Scannow command in command prompt.
  • Turned off the automatic USB turn off feature to safe power.
After all of this didn't work I finally gave up and bought a new motherboard in the hopes that it would solve my issue but the same thing happened again only this time I got a windows error message to go along with it telling me that the last USB device I connected to my computer malfunctioned and that windows doesn't recognize it and that reconnecting the device might fix the issue which it does for another 4 to 6 reboots or so.

I also read online that a cause could be the PSU but that seems so unlikely to me and especially since my entire pc works just fine even under 100% GPU and CPU load at the same time. (Furmark and Cinebench R23)

I tried out my peripherals on a different pc for a week straight as well without any issues to rule out if its the peripherals but they worked just fine.

I also did a fresh reinstall of windows 11 Pro (23H2) after swapping out my mobo to my current one.

I'm very much at my wits end here as I have no idea as to what could be the problem here since the PC itself works and performs great. Do you guys have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your time and help!

Updated the BIOS.
Did you clear the CMOS after verifying your motherboard's BIOS was successfully flashed? BIOS version at this moment of time?

Where did you source the installer for Windows 11? Did you install the OS in an offline mode? What OS are you working with? Did you source the installer for your chipset from AMD's support site? You should also install all drivers that are the latest version relevant to your platform in an elevated command, i.e, Right click installer>Run as Administrator.

After all of this didn't work I finally gave up and bought a new motherboard

Did you reinstall the OS after the motherboard swap?

What sort of storage do you have hooked to your platform?

I did not yet clear the CMOS after updating my bios so il try that for sure.

Current bios version is PROART X670E-CREATOR WIFI BIOS 1905

I sourced the installer for windows from the microsoft website and installed it using the media creation tool through a USB stick and installed windows 11 in online mode as the installer didn't let me install windows without internet and I did completely reinstall windows after the mobo swap

Windows version is 23H2.

As for the chipset drivers for my cpu I used the ones from the Asus website where I also got the bios update from.

I also did install all the drivers running them as administrator.

And the storage I'm using are 2 SSD's, a Samsung 970 evo plus 1tb and a Samsung SSD 980 pro 2TB
with the 970 evo being the OS drive.

I should also add that the 2 SSD's came from my previous build where I had no issues with them.

Thanks for your quick reply!

Hey there,

Try reduce the SOC voltage down a notch or two. So, if it's set at 1.20v or something then set it for 1.15v. Just a small reduction. See if that helps.
Thanks for your quick reply and it was set to auto mode, so I set it to manual and with a voltage of 1.15 like you said so here's hoping that it works!

Unfortunately due to the nature of the issue I cant immediately know if it worked or not so il keep you updated!

Can you explain to me why that would help though?
Il admit that I don't know much about the ins and outs of the BIOS and what certain things do.

So, there was a bug in the AMD AGESA code for the newer bios's. It had the exact same issues you describe. There was a hot fix for it with a new bios revision, and whilst it mostly worked, on some systems it didn't. By trial and error I guess. they discovered that reducing the SOC voltage by a notch solved the disconnects.

I've only been chatting with another user about this recently, but can' for the life of me find the thread. One of the mods here posted about the fix. I'll rack my brain and see if I can find it.

Clearing CMOS may help here to.

Actually, found the thread. Whilst it's referencing the Zen 3/AM4 arch, you might try the SOC anyway.

Hello crasherT,

Are you using Microsoft Security Essentials on your system? I am experiencing a similar issue and it looks to be tied to Windows Defender. I initially lost functionality on a Windows 7 system after a Security Intelligence update. Now it has occurred on a Windows 10 system (22H2).
