Hello all,
First of all I am new to building a pc and this forum so please forgive me if I post this in the wrong place.
I am from Germany so my english wont be perfect here and there. Sorry for that.

Yesterday I build my new system with the following components:
Ryzen 5 3600
AsRock Fatal1ty B450 itx/AC
ZOTAC GTX 1660 Super Amp edition
16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX LP DDR4 3200
For Power I have an Cooler Master B700 V2 which did its Job without any issues for about a year in my old system
Also I use a Samsung EVO 500GB SSD which also woked in my old system.
I think this ist everything that ist relevant if I forgot sth please tell me and I will provide the information.

But what is my Problem now?
I tested the system and bootet from the old windows Installation that was still on the SSD. It all seemed to work so I tried to restart after about 2 minutes
The following Installation of Windows 10 via USB went trough without any Problems and after some time in the freshly installed OS the Screen Just went black and the system restarted. Now I am Not even able to Install from USB anymore without having the system restarting randomly.

What I tried so far:
Check all connectors
CPU temperature is at about 50°C
Started the Installer in UEFI and Legacy Mode
Tried to install latest debian(also failed)
Mobo is at latest firmware
Adjusting ram settings in UEFI setup from Auto to the explicit values
Tried to Install on another known good HDD (but 10TB dont know if this size will cause new problems)
I ran memtest86 (booted from USB) over night which told me no error with ram and also it seemed to have stayed on over night.
Also in UEFI setup I left it at idle to See if it will restart.

What I want to test later in the evening:
Perform a Stress Test of the system via ultimate boot cd and See if load causes the system to reboot and at the same time measure the power consumption.

But apart from that I dont know what can cause the Problems (maybe psu even if it never caused Problems -> stresstest?)
What can I do to identify the problem?
Did you experience issues like this and have any ideas where this random reboot comes from?

I would appreciate any hint/Input from you.

Best regards and thanks in advance
Tim

Ps: I know there are no random restarts. What I mean with random in this case ist that I cant find any obvious reason for restarting like "If at some Point in Installation then restart"

So if I assume memtest86 booted from USB did not cause any reboot over night (6+ hours) the differences between both "Operation modes" can be used to narrow down on the cause am I right with this?
So the differences that come to my mind are:
1. Less load on the System with memtest86 (even if the Installer should not cause to much load either)
-> Bad PSU
-> Bad Cooling (which at least for the CPU does not seem to be the case)
2. No sata (SSD/HDD) Access
-> faulty storage devices (but both I tested were known good)
-> bad sata Data cables (I used the new ones that came with the Motherboard)
-> bad power for the storage devices but at least the ssd should not need that much Power right?

Do I miss any differences?

As this is the First pc I built I Just dont know how to debug this.

Since being able to get into the bios update to the latest one. Make sure to read instructions well, because some manufacturers have some steps to take like in going from bios to bios.

Probably need to reinstall windows after this looking at those extra things to do.
ASRock > Fatal1ty B450 Gaming-ITX/ac

These are the extra things to do after when looking to upgrade to bios 3.20 and later,

* Please install "AMD all in 1 with VGA driver ver:18.50.16.01_WHQL" or a later version before updating to this BIOS.
** If you updated the BIOS before updating the AMD all in one driver, please refer to the Display recovery SOP to recover your system.
*** User will not able to flash previous BIOS once upgrading to this BIOS version.
**** If the current BIOS version is older than P1.70, please update BIOS to P1.70(PinnaclePI-AM4_1.0.0.6) before updating this version.
think that installing AMD all in 1 with VGA driver ver:18.50.16.01_WHQL" or a later version before updating to this BIOS cannot happen in current state why the reinstall will be necessary.

If your bios is 3.20 or later will you be fine to just update to a later one,but because of that driver issue will reinstall still be necessary.

That older psu might give problems. Also not highly regarded for quality,b ut should be enough to power the system. If you can get hold of someones spare psu or a friend will let you use his psu (maybe even local shop) would it be good to put this to the test.

Thank you very much for your answer and for your interest in helping me!

I forgot to tell you that my board was shipped with the latest BIOS.

I will try to get another PSU. Yesterday I checked the power consumption when the restart takes place. It was around 75 Watts. For me that looks like it is not an issue with the PSU because my old pc for sure did consume more power...

I will go to some local pc store and see if he can find sth. that is wrong.

I also found one thread where disabling the c-states of the cpu helped against random restarts. As after a quick research C-States seem to be from Intel I am not sure if this is available on my Ryzen.
But I will do some more research and try it.

Also yesterday it restarted before partitioning in the installer so I dont think that any relevant storage access has been done.

I am just kinda lost right now if changing the PSU and checking C-States does not help.

I will report back. If you have any more suggestions please give it to me. I will take any help that I can get.
Best regards and Thanks again!

Check ram as well, sometimes a kit might just not play well with a normal load.

You checked the bios in there to see if it is the latest?
Sry for the late reply.
As I said in my previous answer for me it looks Like it is the latest BIOS (I compared the Version Numbers)
I Just brought it to some local pc Service guy because he can do much better testing with some testbenches. I will Report Back if he finds sth.
Thank you very much for your help.
Best regards

So I am back and even more clueless...
Got the PC back from the service guy and he said the only cause he can think of is a defect on the mainboard because he "tested" all the other components.
So I ordered a new one which resulted in the same reboots (if not worse)

I got all the components (known good) I could get from my friends to do testing myself.

So I think I have changed anything except CPU:

  • New Mainboard
  • Another PSU
  • Other RAM
  • Other SATA cables
  • other graphics cards (some radeon R9 -> same restart behaviour and a GTX560 -> not even a image -> too old?)
How likely is it that there is some BIOS setting I have to change from auto to sth. specific and which?
Am I missing anything?

Even a cpu can be faulty,if nothing else gives the problem might it be good to rma cpu as well.
Excactly that was the problem.
I got in touch with the support and they told me I should send them the CPU and I got a new one which finaly works.

Thank you very much for your help and the effort you put in this!
Best regards
Tim
