Hello Everyone,

I had build a new PC in April 2024. The PC was working fine so far.

A few weeks ago I had updated the bios to the latest version. However off late once a day my PC randomly restarts. Today suddenly it rebooted and bios setup window opened. I am sharing screenshots.

My MB is Gigabyte Z790 UD AC. Earlier gigabyte perf drives were on by default but after latest update they were disabled (by default) so as to protect the processor.

OS: Windows 11 (up to date)
CPU: Intel i7-14700K
RAM: 32 GB
MB: Z790 UD AC
GPU: RTX 4070 super
PSU: MSI MAG A750GL PCIE5 ... new one bought in April.

SFC/Scannow states there are no problems. Windows as such runs fine.

I am attaching system info and bios screenshots in this post. I chose load optimized defaults and reboot when incorrect bios settings screen opened.

Request anyone to please advice as to what should I do.

Thank you

Jack

First check if the Ram is fine. Follow instructions on how to run Memtest86

https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/how-to-test-ram

If Ram isn't the problem, then check if the Bios is running fine or if it crashes. If not, then maybe you should try to reinstall Windows and see if that fixes it.

If that does not fix the issue, then its narrowed down to either the GPU, CPU or the PSU. To check if the GPU is the issue, Remove the video cable from the GPU and insert it to the CPU. Unfortunately to check if the CPU is the issue, you need to remove the CPU and find another spare one unless someone here can tell if there is a better way to check an issue with CPU.

The same can be said for the PSU as well. In anycase can you let us know the make and model of the PSU?

Seconding @KingLoki.

Check Event Viewer.

However, I suggest starting with Reliability History/Monitor. Much more end user friendly and the time line format may reveal some pattern even though the restarts appear random. You can veiw entries by Days or Weeks.

Event Viewer requires a bit more time and effort to navigate and understand.

To help:

How To - How to use Windows 10 Event Viewer | Tom's Hardware Forum (tomshardware.com)

Both tools provide the means to obtain more detailed information about any given entry. The details may or may not be helpful.

Thank you for your reply guys.

1) PSU is fine and its not under-powered.
2) I ran program to check RAM and it did not give errors. I ran a program called HCI Memtest.
3) I think this maybe has to do with bios settings

WrongRookie wrote "If Ram isn't the problem, then check if the Bios is running fine or if it crashes.". How to check if bios is running fine or if it crashes?

I am pasting event log and related information

Or causing some sort of domino effect that in turn causes errors.

There are also error references to Amazon.

And I would be very concerned about the Windows Defender being constantly stopped.

What exactly is that TA.exe program doing or supposed to be doing?

TA.exe : It is a stock market charting software which I had written in .net. It is an old program developed a decade ago. It reads data and shows charts.

I have been using this program for a long time now and never had system random reboots because of this. Plus in most cases this program was not even running when pc rebooted.

A random PSU calculator specifies a minimum of 553W just for the CPU and graphics card. WIth a standard overhead of 20% you're looking at 664W before you even add in the power draw of all the other components.
My PC has been running fine with this PSU since April - mid Oct. Plus when system rebooted randomly no games were on and just a few programs were running. I don't think it was drawing too much power.

It's your call of course, but when you're getting BSODs or restarts that it's hard to explain it's never wise to just assume that stuff must be working OK. Components fail and they become unstable, and whilst that 750W PSU might be capable of powering the PC it's certainly been working at the higher end of it's rated spec. When I build a PC I calculate the expected power draw and then double it to size the PSU - I'd have a 1000W quality PSU in there.

Multiple suspects - including the PSU.

It may not be just a single component, app, etc. - it may be some "perfect storm" of events that lead to the BSODs or restarts/reboots.

And it is good that TA.exe has run for so long. And hopefully can continue to do so. However, keep in mind that other changes may be in play and now cause problems for TA.exe. You may need to take another look at your code to ensure that all is up-to-date and that some deprecation is not involved.

Works fine for the most part unless something "X" is present....

Looking back at the posted log entries I see references to Adobe and Visual Studio. Graphics related?

Graphics certainly impact the GPU's power demands on the PSU.

= = = =

Take a closer look at Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer.

Clicking any given entry will provide more details. The details may or may not be helpful.

What you are looking for are error codes, warnings, and even informational events just before or at the time of the reboots. Likely some pattern involved. Look up (google) the error codes being provided.

You know your system and you know your code. Some error code may lead to additional insight leading to the culprit(s).

I appreciate your feedback. However as mentioned earlier at idle (with just windows and browser tabs only) my PC does not draw power even close to what my PSU is capable of giving. I had done computations before I had bought that PSU. Plus my PC did not have problems earlier. A couple of months ago I was playing a PC game at high graphics settings and even with that load my PC worked okay. So I may not blame the PSU at the moment.

TA.exe does not run the whole time and it is a .net application that does not interfere with the hardware directly. It is a decade old app used by many folks and has never resulted in a major issue in a PC ever.

Adobe would be for PDF reading and Visual Studio is for coding in .net. Not graphics related.

Whenever system rebooted automatically earlier GPU was at idle as no such programs were running. I think it would be a BIOS issue as this started after I upgraded bios to latest version. Thus I have downgraded bios now and lets see if this helps or not.

It seems that you are having problems configuring the BIOS after choosing to load the optimized default settings. If you can attach the screenshots of your system and BIOS information, the community or technical experts can help you identify specific settings or steps to follow. For now, make sure that the boot priority is correct, manually reapply the custom settings if necessary, consider a BIOS update if a newer version is available, and check the system stability after rebooting for possible problems.
I downgraded bios yesterday as this whole problem started after I updated bios to the latest version. Should I share bios images to ensure the settings are all optimal for my hardware? Since you cannot do printscreen in bios I need to take photos from my phone. Right?
