Hello. I have a
i5-4590
Cryorig H7 cooler
MSI GTX 930 2GB
16 GB DDR3 RAM (4x4)
Gigabyte z97-U3DH motherboard
EVGA 650 watt Gold PSU
1 TB 7200 RPM HDD
256 GB Samsung 840 Evo SSD

[/list]

Here is a link of my system with Speccy.
My PC has been shutting off randomly for seemingly no reason. I do not get any error or anything. It just shuts off randomly and suddenly. It has been always able to turn on right back after turning off and be just fine. I got a BSOD once playing GTA V getting a system service exception error message once, but it has not happened again. I have not changed any of the parts for a long time. I also am getting good temperatures with my CPU being around 30 idle and 45 ish playing games and GPU being ~42 idle and ~74 C while playing games. Every time it has shut off so far has been just idling, or watching Netflix / YouTube. I also have done a virus scan with no viruses. The cables are also put in correctly and fully in place. MY SSD and HDD are also in good shape with no errors and the smart My PC has functioned just fine for the past 2 years I have had these same specs. What can be causing this? Could one of my parts be dying? Which one is the most likely culprit? Could it be my PSU being overloaded or dying? Or could it be my motherboard? I think 650 watts is plenty for my system?

I don't know if this is related, but I have smelled a weird burning smell before turning on my PC when first starting it up. I am not sure for sure it is coming from PC. I tried smelling around my PC, and it seems to be strongest in between the GPU and PSU, but I cannot tell which one. It could be the GPU, PSU, Wifi card, or even motherboard in that area being the smell. It has stopped doing it though and has always worked very well. What can I do to know what is causing it? How do I fix it? Thank you.

Solution

Sure you can use PC without GPU, but there are two things to consider:
- you are not going to be able to play almost any games on integrated graphics
- if cause of the smell is overloaded PSU, running machine without GPU reduces load so much that PSU could stop 'cooking' itself, so even if the smell is gone you can't remove PSU from suspects list
However if you run machine without GPU and still smell something, you at least know it is not GPU fault.
Random shut-downs are caused either by PSU or motherboard, but PSU is more likely. First thing to do, is to dismantle your machine, and take a good look at the parts you thought could be causing the smell, maybe you can find visible marks of the problem. If you find nothing, next step would be to check another PSU.

Well the only plug I did not check was from the wall to PSU. I plugged it back in, and it no longer happens. Looks like that problem is solved. For the smell, do you think I should be able to use the PC without GPU for a while to see if smell goes away? It does not happen as often now though. Thank you for your answer.
