PC randomly started asking for boot device on startup (no BIOS error)

So I had a interesting issue this morning... I turned on my PC everything worked as usual except it takes me straight to a selection of my bootable devices in the BIOS (no error in bios). My default boot device IS recognized, and when selected it starts up 100% normal, but it will not auto boot into the default device anymore.

I tried my usual set of tests, trying different ports and such, but to no avail. Considering when I select my default drive as the boot device it works 100% as normal, I have a feeling something on my motherboard is on the fritz. Anyone have any insight?

EDIT: I should add this build is about 4ish years old, only thing replaced has been a PSU 1 year ago.

My best guess is to move your boot drive to a different SATA port. Also make sure it is set as your main boot drive in the bios. You might also have another device connected that has an operating system that your computer is trying to boot off of.

Thanks for the suggestions, I have tried different SATA ports and it is set as the main boot drive. I do have a second HD, but it has no OS and is not new to the PC (been in for about 2 years). I haven't changed anything in my hardware.

It could be trying to boot from a dvd or disc like object. Also from a device in your usb ports.

Drive is empty, and no media in USB other than standard peripherals (keyboard, headphones, mouse).


I know my boot order is correct, and all. I'm curious if anyone has had this exact problem because in my few years as a PC tech I have not seen this. I have seen plenty of other boot errors/mistakes, but this is a totally new one to me!

Perhaps the BIOS battery is weak? Four years is getting to be about that time, although I'd expect other symptoms like CMOS checksum errors or the clock being reset.

If the error reappears even after replacing battery / clearing CMOS variables, you give it a try by re-seating your CPU as well. Possibly somewhere some contact between CPU & socket may not be firm enough at a minute level. This involves removing the heat sink and CPU from the socket and re-seating it again and refitting the heat sink.

Make sure to replace the thermal paste as CPU heatsink shall be removed from the socket.

I assume you are familiar doing such assemblies etc, else you might end up breaking something else.

Try this little thing... I know it may sound weird but may work... Disconnect the dvd drive from your machine and try once...
