[SOLVED] PC reboots while playing games ?

Hello,

4 months ago I bought and built myself a new, somewhat "high-end", PC. Ever since I bought it I have had this problem where it reboots (no BSOD) when I'm playing games, and I've done all I can to fix it. I did a lot of research and everything pointed towards my CPU overheating (I was using the stock cooler for the AMD Ryzen 3900x CPU). Thinking this was the case I went ahead and bought myself a NZXT Kraken x-63 water cooler to prevent any overheating for my CPU. However, this still didn't solve my problem. Even with the new water cooling system my PC keeps shutting down after around 20minutes into any kind of video game, unless I open the side of my case.

The only two pieces that I didn't buy were my PSU and my case, since they were bought only 1 year ago and I didn't think they needed replacing.

Now the reason why I'm posting here is because yesterday after buying my new water cooler I shut the lid on my case and monitored my temperatures while playing "Remnant from the Ashes" (on all ultra graphics) and the game was running just fine. My temperatures for the CPU was 52°C at 20-30% load and 70°C for my GPU at 90% load and my RAM was using about 8/32GB, and suddenly my PC shuts down again. These shouldn't at all be dangerous temperatures for either the CPU or the GPU. After this I opened my case's lid and the problem disappears, while the temps for the GPU and CPU remain the same. This (unless the NZXT CAM monitoring software is lying) shows that the problem is neither the CPU or the GPU overheating. I have two intake fans with my water coolers radiator on the front and two outtake fans at the back, so I don't understand what could be causing the sudden reboots that only happen when the case is closed.

My Specs:
  • MB - X570 Aorus Elite
  • CPU - AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-core
  • RAM - Corsair 32GB (2x16GB) Vengeance RGB PRO, DDR4 3200MHz, C
  • GPU - Asus GeForce RTX 2080 Super ROG Strix OC
  • PSU - Fractal Design Ion+ 660P, 80 Plus Platinum
  • Case - Fractal Design Define C TG
  • SSD - Samsung 1TB 970 EVO Plus
  • Monitor - Lenovo Think Vision P27h (27 inches, 2k monitor)
  • BIOS - factory settings
  • Extra - 2x stock case fans, Asus PCE-AX3000 Dual Band Wifi 6
What I've tried:
  • Using AMD Ryzen Balanced Power Plan
  • Replacing the AMD Ryzen Stock cooler with a higher quality (NZXT) water cooler
  • Dusting all my parts (allthough there isn't much dust, since all parts except for my PSU are only 4 months old)
  • Monitoring my temps while playing games, it shuts down even when temps aren't too high
  • Opening up my case actually "solves" the overheating, but still hasn't given me any clues as to what causes the reboots
Here is a picture of My setup.

Hey,

I actually had a talk with a tech specialist on the phone today, who suggested that I use two separate PCI-E cables for my GPU.

He told me, just as you did, that the shutdowns most likely have something to do with my PSU, and that the shutdowns might be caused by my GPU eating up too much power using just one cable. I'll try and stress test my setup now that I'm using two separate PCI-E cables. Why the shutdown went away when I opened my case is still a mystery... Maybe something to do with my PSU choking when the GPU tries to use all its power from just one outlet?

I tried to save myself the costs of a repair store as my last resort, but that will probably have to be my next action.

Thanks for the reply!

That might...
Hey there,

Typically restarts like that point to an issue with the PSU. Yours is a rather good one. But that doesn't mean it isn't failing (you just wouldn't expect it though). Have you another PSU you could swap out with and check? Alternatively, maybe bring to a local repair store, and get them to swap out the PSU and test. It might only cost £$€20 or so.

That might work. You have 55amps on the 12v rail. It should be enough. Try it and see. Let us know how you get on.
