PC restarts randomly

Hi everyone,

So I'm having problem with my rig. It had been restarting randomly. My software platform is win 8.1 but since I have trouble several days ago, I decided to upgrade to win 10. Today it only restarts once and no more restart for 4-5 hours (until now) I think.

The PC restart like it has a power down (blackout I think) and automatically rebooting. Sometimes it can last to my desktop display, other times it keeps restarting even without passing the windows loading screen.

So this is my spec:
Core: i7 4790k (no overclock)
Motherboard: Asrock z97x killer
GPU: Asus GTX 750TI Strix OC (I've done no overclock also)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 2x(2x4) = 16GB total
PSU: Corsair VS550
HSF: Cooler Master Hyper 212x
SSD: Corsair Neutron 120GB
PCIe Wifi Card: TP Link 3800
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912
Fans: Fractal 120mm (x2), Xigmatec 140mm (x1)

What steps I have done:

1. Breadboarding
I've done breadboarding starting from 1 pc of RAM (+SSD Windows 10 installed) and no problem at all (no restarts).

2. Checking PSU paper clip test (only green and black)
The fan is running, so no problem I think.

3. Monitoring heat and voltage
I am using HWinfo and I will put the data below

a. Downloading Steam only without playing anything

b. Running Prime95 ver 26.6 blend test (about 20 minutes)

4. According to several PSU calculator website, my rig will only consume about 300W underload, so I think it's still plentiful for 550W

5. Disabling auto restart on system failure. The last restart still occurs after I disable it.

Motherboard, CPU, PSU are not new. The motherboard has been used about 6 months, CPU I think less than a year, and PSU is about 4 months.

Can anyone help me with what further steps? My suspicion is the PSU but looking at the data, I think it is not a problem. I am afraid if there is something wrong on the motherboard. But I don't know since I am new to computer.

Thanks for your help

well my first thought was either ram or power supply. the card's recommended psu requirement is 400 watt, so you should probably be ok. yeah there are more complicated answers to that but im not suspicious of it. and you say you've checked each ram dimm individually?

i would suggest running a test on the ram with something like memtest. if it restarts, try doing it 1 dimm at a time. if theres a bad ram dimm, that should ferret it out.

what situations does it restart under? gaming? browsing? just sitting there?

is there anything that goes on along with the restart? a sudden freeze or screen image alteration?

have you stress tested to gpu?

also, and this might be crazy but hear me out, have you disconnected the reset...

Thanks for your answer cosmoji

each ram stick I have tested on the farthest slot of the ram ( I think about 20-30 seconds each) since I just looked that it will start up windows and then I turned it off again.

The situation varies. Before, it restarts when I played The Witcher 3 and Dota 2 but I think it is because of the CPU overheating. After I placed my HSF, everything is fine.

No sudden freeze or screen image alteration. Just quickly turn black and reboot. Kind of hitting a reset button after you mention this 😀

I tested with furmark and left. When I got back (about 2-3 hours later) it has restarted. I set the furmark to 1 hour.

So right now I will do the memtest and again the furmark later, with the reset button disconnected. I will let you know what happen next. Thanks a lot, at least this can keep me going for trying :)

Furmark test @1920x1080 (2xAA) for about 1hour and 8 minutes

Lol I think perhaps it is the reset switch

I'm satisfied for now. Really hope that is the case 😀

Thank you for your help
