Hello everyone,

I have a reasonably high end PC that ran extremely fast when I first got it around Christmas last year. Fast forward to now when Chrome and Steam take ages to load. I don't understand what the source of the slowdown is. I will post PC system requirements below.

Intel i7 6700 @ 3.4GHz
32GB (I Think 2133MHz)
Western Digital Blue 3TB 7200RPM SATA
GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1070 G1 8G

Thanks to all answers!

Check what programs and services autostart when booting the PC, and deactivate any entries that you're sure you don't need to autostart.

As for Chrome, maybe take a look at the installed extensions, and remove any you may find you don't use/need anymore.

Since you're on a conventional hard drive (HDD) and not on SSD, defragmenting your HDD might help improving performance a little ;)

Getting an SSD for your OS and programs will make a huge difference. But doing a cleanup on the system will also help. Download a trial version of malwarebytes and run a full scan. Run disk cleanup and disk defragmenter. pull up task manager and disable a lot of startup items that don't "need" to start up when you power the system on, like steam, one drive (if you dont use it), etc.

Chrome has no plugins. The disk is 3% fragmented as of 2 days ago. I have already trimmed autostart programs with medium - high impact, as well as not measured.
