PC shop bad experiences and lies

I like to think up new topics for discussion now and again and after reading the thread in this link i came up with the title for my latest topic. (29) Question - GPU messed up by unofficial installer | Tom's Hardware Forum (tomshardware.com)

What problems/lies have you had with pc's or pc related goods.
This is my contribution to set the ball rolling.

As i walked into a well known pc chain store in England their was an almighty argument with a guy who said his pc was faulty and was refusing to leave the store , he talked through his teeth hardly moving his lips so the security cameras could not lip read what he was saying. He told the security guy if he did not let go of him he would let his pc drop on the floor and it would like it was the guards fault , he would then claim assault charges loss of pc and compensation.

It was my turn next with the same guy ouch ! I had a very expensive games rig only a few hours old , the only game i had put on was Wolfenstien , within minutes the graphics froze and the sound stuttered till it crashed . He said i had not used it enough to prove it faulty and refused a refund or replacement pc. He only agreed to check it out cos i had the game disc with me and i said it would crash in a few minutes. They said they were too busy to look at it that day so i left the pc and the disc and went back the next day.
Lie number one ..... they said their was nothing wrong with it.
Lie number two ..... the staff claimed to have taken it in turn to play the game during serving customers and it did not crash.
I asked for permission to go behind the counter to show them what happened during playing the game ..... they did not know i had set a trap.
I asked who played the game and 1 guy owned up so i showed him i had set it to auto save every 20 mins and their were no saves ..... this proved he had not used it at all.
I was due to go on holiday so i said when i get back i am going to trading standards.
Literally hours after getting back home from holiday a freelance engineer phoned me and said he had a replacement mobo and sound card for me and even came to my home to do the work. That was for a machine that everyone said was NOT faulty
Although it was about 6 years ago that was the last pre-built pc i ever bought.

Some years ago, looking in the Return rack at BestBuy.

HP desktop, good price.
Ask the salesperson: "All these systems have been fully wiped and reinstalled, right?
'Oh yes, Sir. We do that with all returned systems'

Later, asking the GeekSquad manager: "Just to verify, this system has been returned to original factory condition?"
'Absolutely!'

OK then....
Later that night, cruising through the Registry....the first owners name, address, phone num, credit card number, etc.
He had apparently bought something, and the details were saved.
I wanted NO part of having that in my possession.

ProTip - for ANY used system...anything you personally do not break the manufacturers seal on, you personally need to do a full wipe and reinstall. Even if the seller says he did it just 5 minutes ago.

2009, again at BestBuy.
My son's first college laptop. Low end Toshiba, Win XP originally.

The HDD died, about 90 days old.
Do all my diagnostics - dead 160GB drive.

At the GeekSquad counter:
"This needs a new drive. Still under warranty"
'Well sir, we have to do our testing, blah blah'
"OK, whatever....but it IS a dead drive"

"Sir, did you perform the Windows Recovery function, and create the DVD to reinstall with?"
'No, but that is irrelevant. It just needs a new drive'
"But but...we'll need to reinstall Windows, and you'll have to buy a new Windows license. That will be $250."
'WHAT???? No, it just needs a new drive. I'll source and reinstall the OS myself.'

"But sir, without 'Windows' it won't run"

"Dude. Drive. Now"

I picked it up after a few days.
It still runs, and was my original Win 10 test box.

Hi USAFRet If i take a pc to my local dump i always remove the drive and smash the plates then put it back in , in england i saw a film of an undercover film crew in india trawling back street shops for cheap hard drives. Back in england they knocked on the door of the guy the drive belonged to and he said he had taken the pc to a local council tip ...... somehow it ended up in india

I've found systems on the side of the road for trash....fully working. Dell 2400.
Boot it up, and there is the kids homework, name, address, etc.
The only thing wrong with it was massive virus.

Christmas 1999, throwing out a massive armload of wrapping paper.
Dumpster in the business park around the corner.

Open the slide door....hey, whats that?
A laptop, right on top.

An hour later....4 laptops, 2 printers, 3 desktops (incl a mail server).
A company had closed their office and simply tossed out stuff they did not want.
All those systems still worked.
