Question PC shut down suddenly and won't start.

Could I please check a few things?

My Offspring's pc just shutdown.
Well, it didn't shut down. It just stopped working.
There were apparently no previous signs, no hints.

To begin with, when you unplugged, pressed on to clear the power, then switched it back on,
you got a brief moment of a few things: Power button light, gpu fan and light, cpu fan, top fan and rear fan (not side fan). Lasted a fraction of a second.
We did this a few times while trying to work out what started and what didn't. (perhaps we shouldn't).
Then after a few goes, nothing happens whatsoever.

We swapped out the power lead for a known good one.
We have pushed all the cables in (pretty sure all of them.)
No difference.

We are thinking it might be PSU or mobo.
II am initially thinking that probably the easiest thing to test is the PSU.
(I shall be looking that up next)

Is there anything else it could be?
If it is the mobo and I test using my good psu, could the faulty mobo damage the psu?
If it could be something else, could that damaged part damage my pc if i put it in mine to test?
(we have the same cpu socket for example)

I would also check the RAM modules for issues by swapping sticks out 1 by 1 in different slots. You seem to be on the right track for diagnosing the issue. Report back when you find anything else out.

I am thinking that the psu would fire up with zero ram, wouldn't it?

We put a paper clip between four and five to make it switch on.
Got no fan, (although I am not positive it isn't a semi fanless model.)

We have 5v on the main power to the mobo (which is apparently for the switch)
But when we loop that with a paperclip, we have nothing on the other rails.



It was bought June 2015 but it is second hand. I know the origiinal owner, but they were 15 when they got it. There is no paperwork.

I would like to do more tests.

I would like to maybe try my psu on it, is there anything that could damage my psu if the mobo is faulty do we think?

I thought I would test the cable running from the psu to the mobo.
Luckily it is fully modular.
I was expecting there to be continuity running pin one to pin one, but it doesn't.
Should it?
It seems to be all over confusingly.

Now tested continuity with no power, but with the paper clip.
So, it appears that the circuits work, but there is no power after the initial power on off circuit.
There does appear to be an initial surge and that then goes away.
So, it is like a loose connecton in the psu that moves as soon as it is heated up.
That is now my theory.

I wouldn't mind using my psu but am concerned that it might get damaged if something else is faulty.
Also, the whole 'having to recable everything all over again' thing I would like to avoid.
But I am running out of options i think....

I concur with your conclusion that the PSU is most likely the issue. I doubt there would be a secondary issue and even if there was I would doubt even more that would damage your other PSU.

Next is to see if we can wangle a warranty.
It was bought summer 2015.
Is an EVGA Supernova NE650G. They seem to be selling with ten year warranties these days.
I am still in contact with the vendor. I know him.
He was 15 when he bought it and doesn't think he registered the warranty.
I don't suppose you have any idea what they are like with warranties?

Unfortunately, I cannot speak to EVGA warranties however I do know they have pretty good customer service with their graphics cards. Good luck.

I shall report back. (as long as I remember)
I have messaged them.
According to their website, it has a 10 year warranty.
It even has a 3 year second user warranty which seems pretty impressive.
We have only had it for six months.
Only problem is, how long without the pc....

OK, it does have a second user three year warranty, but it lasts only from date of original purchase.
It needs the original purchaser details and invoice to claim on the ten year warranty.
