Question PC shuts down instantly when running FurMark or playing demanding games

Hi everyone,

I’m having an issue where my PC shuts down completely when I run FurMark or play demanding games. It powers off instantly, almost like a power cut.

Here's my setup:

  • CPU: Intel i7-8700K
  • GPU: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-F GAMING (BIOS v2801)
  • RAM: 16 GB G.Skill DDR4 @ 2133 MHz
  • PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 P2 (650W Platinum)
  • Cooling: Air-cooled, temperatures seem fine (CPU 33°C, motherboard 28°C in BIOS).

What I’ve tried so far:

  1. Verified temperatures under load (seem normal).
  2. Enabled XMP in BIOS to run RAM at correct speeds.
  3. Tested power connections to the GPU and motherboard.
  4. Updated NVIDIA GPU drivers and motherboard BIOS.
  5. Ran FurMark, which causes an immediate shutdown.

Additional notes:

  • This system has worked perfectly for a few years, running demanding games without any issues.
  • The shutdown happens instantly, not like a thermal shutdown or blue screen.
  • System works fine under light loads (browsing, non-intensive tasks).
  • PSU should theoretically handle my setup, but could it be failing under load?
I suspect it might be a PSU, GPU, or motherboard issue, but I’d love to hear if anyone has had similar experiences or knows what could be causing this.

Any suggestions on how to diagnose or fix this would be greatly appreciated!

That would be indicative of either your PSU being incapable of powering your PC's innards or a thermal problem causing it to shutdown or the VRM's on your motherboard are failing.

How are you cooling your processor?

PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 P2 (650W Platinum)
How old is the PSU?

PSU should theoretically handle my setup, but could it be failing under load?

EVGA have hit or miss units in their own top tier lineups but in your case if the unit is faulty or failing and you're under warranty, that's nothing to worry about. In order to rule out your PSU being the root of the issue, you will need to source(borrow, not buy) a reliably built 750W unit from a friend or neighbor and see if the issue is alleviated.

Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-F GAMING (BIOS v2801)
Just an FYI, your motherboard has a BIOS pending update.

RAM: 16 GB G.Skill DDR4 @ 2133 MHz
You could extract a lot more performance from your platform, running a dual channel tight latency DDR4-3200MHz ram kit.

Those are great suggestions. My system is 7-8 years old, so the PSU is the same age. My son has a gaming PC with a PSU I know works, so I can try swapping it to rule out whether it’s a PSU issue. Are the cables connected correctly in the following picture?

My PC is cooled with a Noctua NH-D12L.

It turned out the PSU was the problem. I just tested with my son's 750W, and it works perfectly. I’ve gamed and run FurMark without any issues. Now I’ll try to see if my 650W can power my son’s PC. His only has a 1060, and I have a 1080TI. The 1060 should use less power, so maybe my 650W PSU can handle it? If not, I’ll have to go buy a new PSU.

Thanks for the help, and Merry Christmas when the time comes! 😀
