PC Shuts down when running COD Advanced Warfare

What is running at 46C? Is that the CPU or the GPU? Is that 46C when you are gaming or sitting on the desktop?

It is important to realize that either an overheating CPU or GPU can cause this type of problem. Usually it's a case of a dirty heatsink or a fan not working properly.

It's also important to know the temperature under load. So you'll need some monitoring software. The best is something with an OSD (On Screen Display) so you can see the temps realtime in game. However you can use software that you leave running on your desktop while playing the game and ALT-TAB our (obviously before you crash) and check them quickly.

My first guess is that it could be the GPU overheating.

There is also a chance it's either a faulty graphics card or a bad driver. However bad drivers usually cause a BSOD or a Windows had recovered error and not a shutdown. A bad GPU is notorious for shutting off a computer.

Another likely issue could be a poor or failing PSU.

Can you provide us with your system specs?

Try downloading and installing MSI Afterburner. It comes with Riva Statistics Server (RTSS). Once installed, set up the On Screen Display to show GPU temp, CPU Temp, and GPU Fan Speed. It can display a lot more information, but for troubleshooting temperature issues, this will be enough. Once installed start COD and start playing. Keep an eye on the OSD and note how hot the CPU and GPU is getting. If the GPU is getting hot, note the GPU Fan Speed.

Let us know the results.

If you need a hand configuring Afterburner let us know.

Hi Techgeek,

I just did everything you said, Although I did not watch CPU Temp. I ran Cod for 30-40 Minutes with 61-C for GPU 1189mhz 55% used. It stayed 59-61C the whole 40 minutes, then just randomly shut down again. Although i believe it is running a tad longer with the side of the pc off. Any suggestions?

Well 61C isn't too hot for that card.

Can you try adding the CPU to the monitor and try again? Just to eliminate it overheating. Usually the CPU will throttle back if it starts to overheat, but lets check it to be sure.

Do you run any other games? If so, does your computer shut down when playing them?

P.S. Can you tell me the make and model of your PSU?

Hi Techgeek,

I added CPU - 59-67C the whole time. Shut down @ 62C.

I do run quite a few - All the Cod's, Battlefield and GTA but thats it.

PSU? I guess thats power supply? Rosewill Xtreme Series RX850-S-B 850W Continuous @40°C ,80 PLUS Certified

It's because you should be playing Battlefield instead. Your computer is allergic to bad games. lol just kidding, seriously though Try using a slightly older NVIDIA driver. I had a similar problem with BF4 and a gtx 760. Any other game worked fine, but BF4 with that driver. I think FPS multiplayer games work the cards abnormally.... Also run Realtemp GT and tell me your CPU temps after a normal match. It will display max and min per core.

Oh and you said your PSU is 80+ right? Not bronze, gold, or silver?
If nothing else works, as a last resort, change out that PSU for a 80+ gold 650w or 750w PSU. Preferably Seasonic or a Corsair RM series.

I say this because 80+ means you are probably getting terrible efficiency out of that PSU and your EVGA (which they aren't known for their high quality) overclocked GPU is sucking too much power because of multiplayer taxing the system.

Yeah I was just wondering. Sometimes on those non certified ones they could say 850 but run at 500w and draw 1000w from your wall.

Anyway. I think it's just that they don't have adequate driver support for the game for GPU's yet. A lot of other people are having problems with 770's and that game. A lot games that Activision and EA release nowadays are sloppy and rushed when it comes to bugs and drivers.

Have you tried underclocking your GPU to stock speeds to see if that works?
