My nephew decided to take the side plate off of our family PC tower and bang his hands and a small toy against the interior casing. This area includes the backplate mounting structure for the CPU and the surrounding area of the motherboard. Now the PC is dead. I tried turning it back on once. And the MOBO power light came on inside the case and then made a sad noise and died. I don't want to try anything else. It is unplugged now.

What recommendations could you suggest for replacement? This type of abuse would likely damage something. Any ideas on what it would fix it? Pretty sure new MOBO and cpu would solve it but I'm no expert-

Please help!

Chances are your motherboard has suffered physical shock damage (in which case you naughty little nephew is the real sorcerer here 😛 ).
Use a different PSU and see if the problem persists. If it does and try removing the ram sticks and test them individually. Test your Ram, HDD and CPU on another compatible platform, as chances are they might have survived the ordeal and you can reuse them. Also test your GPu if you had a discrete one.

Most likely your mobo has gone kaput.
