Hi Everyone,
I have recently acquired an old and abandoned ASUS G73JH-TY042V from a friend and there are some things i need to solve before using it. I need someone to counsel me or help me out. Here are my specs :

  • CPU : Intel Core i5 - 520M
  • Motherboard : Intel HM55
  • GPU : ATI MOBILITY RADEON 5870 HD

Issue :

When i boot up the laptop, either two things happen :

  • The fans start spinning but nothing comes up on the screen
  • The CPU's fan is working ,lights are on but GPU's fan is dead and nothing comes on screen
  • It boots up but shuts off mid-use (sometimes even before system fully charges or while i bios menu)
  • Sometimes i can use it for 10-15 minutes and it heats up and shuts down.

What I've Tried So Far:

  1. Motherboard and fan cleaning
  2. Thermal paste check : I cleaned the old and dried thermal pastes both on CPU and GPU and re-applied new ones
  3. VBIOS Update: Updated the GPU's bios
  4. Reseated GPU: Removed and reinstalled the GPU to ensure a proper connection.
  5. Monitor and Cables: I connected it to a monitor and it display "power management" then enters sleep mode. But it works just fine with my mother's laptop which is an HP EliteBook2540p

Request:

Has anyone encountered a similar issue with this setup?
Can somebody point me to the right path to restore this machine?
Is there a specific component to change or are there many components that don't work?

Sorry for bad english. Thank you in advance for your help.

Did you also clean the venting on the cooling assembly while you did the thermal paste change?

Yep ,i also did that. I'm a bit of a once-in-a-while lazy perfectionnist you see... So i even disassembled the fans and cleaned them all with alcohol and tissue.

Oh and i tried to heat up the motherboard,GPU and CPU too
