My build:
- Intel Core i7-4770K (Not overclocked or anything).
- MSI GeForce GTX 780 3GB.
- Kingston HyperX Beast 2x4GB.
- Asus Maximus VII RANGER.
- CoolerMaster 650W PSU.
- Corsair H100i.
- Samsung 840 EVO Basic 250GB.
- Some random 1TB HDD (Seagate or WD).
- Cooler Master Stryker case.

So today I was casually gaming "The Division" while watching some CS:GO on my other monitor when my PC suddenly died. It was no bluescreen or any other warning. Both of my screens went black and I heard my fans power down.

This has never happened before, and I cant seem to understand what caused it?
I built this PC myself about two years ago, and it has served me well through countless hours of gaming.

The MOBO lights still come on when I turn the PSU on, but nothing happens when I press the power button.

Any ideas?

well

1. check if the power buttton connections are correct

2. check for flashes / beeps from your mobo and cross verify from your mobo manual (check if your components are powering up)

hope it helps!

Have tried both the main and the "reset" power buttons on the case. Tried the "START" button that is located ON the MOBO aswell, without any luck. There is a "click" the first time I press the button. Dunno if that has something to do with anything?

Are the case/gpu /cpu fans powering up?

Any further explanation on that? I understand that this scenario is likely, but what about PSU failiure or something else?

Should I try to transplant a PSU from an older PC to check, or are you guys so certain that I should just RMA my MOBO ASAP?

It's either the power supply or motherboard.

I would take the motherboard out of the case and try it out on the cardboard box for testing to rule out any shorting or bending happening with the board mounted in the case. You need another PSU to test, or put your PSU in another case for testing to rule that out.

The computer may have shutdown due to thermal reasons, but normally it would turn back on. Is the Corsair hydro working fine? I would take the 2 power connectors off the motherboard and test the power supply. Short out pins 16 (green wire/PSU on) with pin 15 or 17 (black wire/common) on hte big 24pin ATX power connector. So basically short out those 2 pins on the PSU then use the switch on the back to turn the PSU on and off without using the motherboard. you can do this to test the PSU and see if all the fans and water cooler are working properly. Disconnect the power to the video card and hard drives first. Just test your fans and water cooler.

If all that works, suspect the motherboard.

Nah. Nothing powers up. When I flip the switch on the back of the PSU, the lights on the MOBO come on; as they should and as they always do. It looks just as it always do when its powered down. When I hit the power button; both the ones on the case and the one in the case nothing happens. There is a "click" as I described first (shortage - some kind of jump I thougt - that might be nothing) but no other component in the case seems to do anything. No lights on the H100i, nothing on the case, no fans, no lights on the disc-drive - no nothing.

Have tried both the main and the "reset" power buttons on the case. Tried the "START" button that is located ON the MOBO aswell, without any luck. There is a "click" the first time I press the button. Dunno if that has something to do with anything?

Isnt this rather excessive? I think I`ll just try some other PSU and check some of the connections. There seems to be a consensus that the MOBO is the culprit here and I will probably try to RMA that ASAP as I still think its covered by the warranty(?).
