Hello guys.
So my PC of four years has popped on me today, I was playing a game on it for a few hours and then it suddenly turned off without warning. I tried to turn it back on without any luck so I opened up the case couldn't smell any burning, the case interior was pretty cool and more or less free from dust. I pulled it out of the multi-plug and plugged it straight into the wall to see if that would help but nothing, although the USB disk drive seemed to whir into life briefly. I changed the plug fuse without any luck either.
So ive left it for a good 5 hours plugged into the wall turned off at the PSU, came back to it and switched it back on and the wall socket and the PSU made this horrible electric crackling noise. Switched it off tried a new power cable and it did the same thing, tried plugging a lamp in and the same noise again confirmed from the socket. I think its safe to assume the plug socket has had its day.
Ive now tried a different room plugged the PC into the wall no electrical noise from the PSU or socket and yet again the PC will not power up. The speakers, lamp and monitor all plugged into that socket all work fine and the multiplug thingy its all attached to runs fine as well. Its weird that the plug and the PSU seem to have been killed but everything in between still fine.
Any thoughts on whats happened? I imagine I need a new PSU but a little worried about further damage to other components from that electrical noise.
