pc switches on then switches itself off

Yeah, power seems to be going into the components, CPU fan etc are spinning but then switches off,

before this problem i was able to bring up bios and stuff(No operating system installed yet) but i had a CMOS issue(tried resetting it) and i tried to get the battery out but it was impossible to get a good grip on it so i switched it back on and now it powers down after everything starts running. theres signs of power still in the motherboard(2 lights on) Nothing is ever shown on the monitor during any of this.

E6600 Intel CPU
620W PSU
2gb 800mhz
abit MAX motherboard
geforce 8800 GTS

i got a feeling the MB is buggered up because we had the cables wrong earlier on for CPU/Graphic card, but when those were sorted the BIOS came up and i could look around in that OK.


edit: it reaches 9.9(power off sequence)in the POST code definitions part of the manual
 
What brand is the power supply, i and veering towards the power supply issues, are all the appropriate power connectors on the MB? also remove everything except the vid card and see if it comes on

its peak power is 680w(according to box)

i think next time ill get my pc built by dell or something :-/
 
enermax is a excellent brand, its possible it might just be flaky or it could be a MB issue, Homebrew computers are way better than dell, try contacting enermax's customer support and get a rma
 
So you powered on the computer while the battery was removed? If that's the case, you may want to try the reset again. You really should do it by the jumpers though, if it has any.

Did you make sure it was unplugged while you were resetting it? If it wasn't your bios wouldn't have reset properly.

What it really sounds like to me is that you did something to the bios that has corrupted it. Hopefully another reset will fix it, but it seems like that is the thing that you're gonna need to RMA.

Actually, you might as well do both at the same time, just to be on the safe side and make sure you are getting all new stuff. Of course this might just be a case of a stuck power switch, but without being there, I don't know.
 
the battery was never removed, we couldnt get it out, it was stuck. power was unplugged while we resetted cmos too. heat sink appears to be in place fine, tightly attached to MB. CPU should work, it got into BIOS earlier and it detected all devices.
 
the cmos usually wont reset unless the battery is removed. the battery is what keeps the settings in the cmos as far as i know. in order to properly reset the cmos you have to remove the battery. if you absolutely cant...rma the board good luck my friend.
 
I don't want to sound like a broken record, but in my experience, when a system shuts itself down it's almost always heat related...they're designed to do that so the processor doesn't fry.

I would remove the heatsink and fan, reseat the processor, make sure you have the right amount of thermal grease, and replace the heatsink, and of course, make sure the fan is plugged in and spins when powered on.

I had a heatsink once that came with a thin layer of thermal grease already on it, and a nearly invisible plastic cover over the grease to protect it. The plastic needed to be removed before installing the HS, but I didn't see it was there. That was enough to keep the system from booting....

sorry guys, turns out my sister had 2 cables the wrong way round for the stuff at the front of the case(power button, reset button and LED lights are at the front)

its working now.
