PC to TV issues

Plugged my laptop into my flat screen using a HDMI to play some steam games. Desktop and internetwise, everything works great. But the moment I select a game in my steam library, huge black bars will start flickering all over the screen, blocking the view. Weirdly enough, the intensity of the flickering changes throughout games, and some games lose sound too. No idea what's going on.

Sounds like a possible resolution mismatch of some sort. Try setting the game to a common resolution like 1920x1080. If it is at that already....scrap my idea.
