Pc turns off soon after turning on

I just got the gtx 970 today but after I put it in I ran into the problem that it shuts off after being turned on. The weird thing is that the longer I leave it off the longer it stays on. I have a the xfx650w psu and was wondering if this was a part of the problem or if it might be something else.

Did you connect the PCIe cable(s) from the power supply directly to the video card? Sounds obvious but people get excited and sometimes forget.
