Hey Everyone,

Please bear with me here as this is my first real build. I recently had to get a new mobo and psu due to leakage from a liquid cooling kit. I have ordered the parts and am attempting to build it myself for the learning experience.

I am following the Newegg TV demo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_56kyib-Ls). I am doing the "external install" atm and thought I had everything sorted and when I went to power it on (memory, 1x gpu, cpu, fan, psu installed), everything seemed to turn on and the fans moved but my monitor isn't picking up any signal.

Given that I am following a step by step tutorial, when I run into issues like this I haven't the slightest clue how to fix it. My initial thought was to take everything apart and bring it to a professional but I really would like to figure this out.

One of my thoughts is that maybe the gpu(s) were damaged during the leak and although they are powering on there is no image (not sure if this is even possible?).

Here is a link to a few images that may help. I was a bit concerned when I was hooking up the power cables because I had to plug in two side by side on one area of the CPU and then the GPUs have a small 2 pin not attached to anything.

My Parts:

  • Mobo: Asus M5A97
    CPU: AMD FX-8320
CPU Fan: Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo
    GPUs: 2x Sapphire Radeon HD6950
    PSU: EVGA Supernova 1000G2 1000W
    SSD: Samsung Evo 120g (Primary)
    HDD: Seagate Barracuda 3TB

I'm sure there is some vital information I left out so if there is anything I can add, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you for any and all help!

My CPU was just setup with the exact same mobo. My other mobo crashed and I replaced it with the exact same one. The link you sent was a PSU.

This is my mobo:

Sorry about the link I was helping someone else and I got the links confused anyway that board requires a bio update to work, if you have an old fx processor, you can install that and update your bios, otherwise your going to need a newer motherboard.

Is it possible to update the Bios if I don't have any display?

I literally only have the CPU/Fan, GPU and PSU hooked into the mobo and I am getting nothing. I don't have any of the drives hooked up.

If this is still the case, could you possibly explain how I would go about doing this and/or send me a link?

Thanks for your help!

You could try this http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?1142-How-to-use-ASUS-ROG-USB-BIOS-Flashback but I don't know if your motherboard has that feature. If that doesn't work, do you have a old fx processor you could borrow from a friend? If so you can put that into your motherboard and it will boot. And you said you only have the PSU, CPU, and GPU connected, did you connect the ram?

I do not believe I have that feature.

I initially tried with memory connected and still nothing. Even without the memory connected, I should be getting something... At the very least a message saying the memory failed. I just have a blank screen.

Alright since the those failed, you're going to need a new motherboard that officially supports your motherboard, (not partially) I don't know if you have a preference in brand, but heres one that I can tell you will work, http://www.amazon.com/M5A99FX-PRO-R2-0-990FX-Motherboard/dp/B008B6ONXK/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1429707980&sr=1-1
Sorry I couldn't help you get it working on that motherboard, but since the 970 chipset is older than your cpu and it isn't updated with the latest bios this is your best option.

Ordered. I kind've wanted a new mobo anyways. So I will get this in a few days and then re-evaluate.

Also, how common is it to fry and/or break the cpu? My biggest concern was that I either A) broke the cpu from too much force when installing the fan or B) thermal paste leaked down onto it.

The CPU was working because I had just taken it out of another system.

Also, when I first put this build together back in Jan-2014, everything worked fine (exact same mobo and cpu). So I am unsure what is going on now. I am guessing it is either a defective GPU, CPU or Mobo. I don't necc think the bios has anything to do with it.

Its pretty hard to break a CPU as long as you were careful, is ok to put a little pressure on the cpu when installing the fan if it broke there would be 1. a crack on the cpu 2. there would be no heat from the cpu if it was broken. as for the thermal paste you'll have to take it out and see for your self but as long as you didn't go overboard (meaning putting a dime size amount) you should be fine. Due to you have 2 GPUs I doubt its a GPU problem.
