My current system is 7 yrs old and needs help. What I really need to do what I want will cost $1500-$2000 for a good workstation that can game like a champ. I don't have that kind of cash right now and wont for another year.
My objective here is to close the gap by updating my current PC(basically a rebuild all but PS and case). I do a lot of machine learning/data science stuff and also I like to game. I'm hoping this will double my processing capability(75% - 100% increase in speed) and enable me to run newer games like elite dangerous and maybe even fallout 4. Then and here is the sticky point is when I do actually build my workstation I will re-purpose this build as a server or NAS box after building a case and buying 2 x 4 TB WD red drives.
So I'll show you what I want to buy then what I have, and let me know if you think its worth the money and any concerns you may have like maybe the cheap mobo.
What I currently do:
2 x 22" monitors DVI VGA inputs only
RStudio(data science very rough on ram)
Python(data science) hopefully I could even get Cuda going?
Elite Dangerous
MineCraft - don't judge me
Proposed build:
GIGABYTE GA-B150M-D3H (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel B150 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - $70
EVGA GeForce GTX 960 02G-P4-2962-KR 2GB SC GAMING, Only 6.8 inches, Perfect for mITX Build Graphics Card - $190
Intel Core i5-6600 6M Skylake Quad-Core 3.3 GHz LGA 1151 65W BX80662I56600 Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 530 - $230
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Memory Kit Model F4-2400C15D-16GRR - $75
Total - $565
The antique I'm currently using
Core 2 Duo E8400
4GB DDR2 800(2x2GB Coursair XMS2)
GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB of pure awesomeness
Gigabyte LGA 775 P45 Mobo
1000 W power supply 80 + Gold rated (corsair i think)
250 GB coursair SSD
500 GB WD drive
I know this isn't going to be an awesome run everything on ultra change but if I could run modern games and get almost double the processing power it would be worth it. Especially if it would work well as a file server or NAS box.
