  • Look for used cards that can't make much money mining. Cards like the R9-290,290x, 390,390x, GTX 780ti, GTX970, 980, 3gb GTX1060, 1050ti.
  • You will need a gaming power supply because most of those cards burn lots of power to get the job done.
  • A cpu upgrade will help, a bios update should let you select between Sandybridge and ivybridge cpus. A i5-2400 or i5-3330 would be ok. You don't really need a i7, most people will want more for a i7 . There are also xeons that are like the i5 and i7 too.
-The i3-2100 should work with the cards mentioned above, it's still 2 cores with 2 Ht ones so it still can do 4 threads. By far upgrading the GPU will help the most.

Some other cards that might be not too bad are the HD-7950...
To play modern games you are needing to build a new pc. The motherboard is 10 years old and doesn’t support anything worth buying in 2021. The RAM is not supported by modern CPU’s, they use DDR4. If the psu is as old as the rest of the system then it needs changing before risking a new gpu on it. You didn’t tell us what psu it had so it may not even be suitable for a pc with a dedicated gpu. Putting money into this old pc would be a bad investment.

You would probably want to start with a gpu. But gpus are very expensive right now. I’d suggest maybe get a used i7 2600, and maybe a used at least gtx 1060 or so, then you can figure out where to go.

Before that discussion, what is the budget and goals?
My budget is around 250$.

With this type of budget, you can get a new cpu, motherboard, and ram that will bury any upgrade of the cpu/gpu of your current setup. Even cheaper if you pick them up used.

Otherwise, the i7-2600/2700/2600k/2700k and almost any gpu will bring a pretty serious performance boost. The problem is that you'll spend almost the same money on these used parts as newer ones that will be higher performance.
