PC Upgrade

In the summer i am looking to upgrade my desktop PC with a budget of £750. I am trying to change only parts of the PC that will affect it's performance (therefore not really looking at a new hard disk or case, though it may need upgrading). I will mainly be playing a game called Planetside 2 (system reqs here http://forums.station.sony.com/ps2/index.php?threads/planetside-2-system-specs.46998/ ) but apart from that i want my PC to run faster in whatever im doing or whatever game i am playing.

My PC specs at the moment are thus:
- Intel Core Duo E6750 @2.66Ghz
- 4Gb of installed RAM (though this RAM is apparently the slowest version available)
- 3.25Gb used, as 32-bit Windows
- Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT 256Mb
- 1920 x 1080 monitor 60Hz
- 3Firewire, 8USB 2.0

It was bought as ready-made: Medion 6486 desktop computer from Tesco.


I would like some advice from the community about a new graphics card, SSD, RAM, Cooling, whether i need a new power supply/case.
What should i upgrade, and what components would you recommend?!

Sorry about the lack of detail, i was trying to see what kind of stuff i could get for around £750 without making a whole new PC.

I wouldnt recommend throwing 750 at that machine, you could build new for that budget.

you can certainly make some changes to that machine, but that gets you into the ballpark

If building a whole new system was out of the question, there are a few upgrades you can do. CPU is socket 775, so you can still upgrade to the Core 2 Quad series, or maybe just a smaller step to the E8400 which is also very good.

GPU would definitely need an upgrade to perform better especially with that screen resolution. Depending on how much you are willing to spend for just 1 part, you can for something like the GTX 660/660ti/HD7850/HD7870 or higher depending on your needs, but all should perform much better than your 8500gt now.

What PSU do you use? Chances are, you will probably need to upgrade that along with a bigger more power hungry GPU.

Memory will probably be fine just for gaming, having the full 4GB would be better though, but still be easily playable. At one point i used 2GB when my motherboards memory slots were DOA except for 1. It worked, but the first few minutes of loading the map/screen, it lagged/fps drop, but then worked fine.

your gonna need a new build....without knowing the specific brand of mobo you have we dont know if it ca be upgraded.

I'd get a new cpu as well, for ps2 a quad core, the cpu that you have is a lga 775 one, so you have a lga 775 motherboard, you need a new motherboard for the recent i5 cpus, so you need basically a new pc.

You can put in there the optical drive and hdd, if it's with a sata interface.

If it's for the summer, many things will change, and there's the haswell cpus coming in June, so it's kind of pointless some parts of the list, but it will give some guide.
