I have an HDMI monitor and a (Win 10 Pro) desktop PC with no HDMI port - it only has a VGA port. I can buy a cable with an 15-pin VGA connection on one end and an HDMI connection on the other end. Are there any other considerations I need to worry about?
Thanks,
Dan

vga to HDMI needs an active adapter to convert analogue signals to digital, a normal cable with pin to pin won´t work.

your ebay link can work the other way around, from HDMI as source (Laptop) to monitor (VGA). But that´s not really common and you would need a special Laptop HDMI port with VGA passthrough for that. But like said, that´s not your way to go 😉
Here some reviews which had problems because of this passive adapter cable:

You wanna connect your PC by displayport, because your PC provides VGA and DisplayPort monitor connection and you could simply use a displayport to hdmi...

What are your PC specs? Does it have discrete graphics card?
Does your PC have DVI video output?
What is model name of your monitor?
Can you list link to that VGA to HDMI cable?

SkyNetRising:

This is from the Lenovo manual (https://www.manualslib.com/manual/360090/Lenovo-Thinkcentre-M81-7518.html#manual):

Video subsystem
• Integrated graphics for a Video Graphics Array (VGA) connector and a DisplayPort connector
• Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) Express x16 graphics card slot on the system board for a
discrete graphics card
Audio subsystem
• Integrated high-definition (HD) audio
• Audio line-in connector, audio line-out connector, and microphone connector on the rear panel
• Microphone connector and headphone connector on the front panel
• Internal speaker (available on some models)

The monitor is an HP 27" HDMI that was packaged with the PC (ie, not sold separately).

The link for the cable is: http://www.ebay.com/itm/172761697825

Thanks for your interest,
Dan

If the monitor has a Displayport as well, use a simple DP to DP cable.
Have a look, if this monitor provides DisplayPort too.

By the way, DisplayPort gets you a better image than the old outdated VGA port. You don´t need to use VGA because you have a high defnition graphics output: DP (DisplayPort)

HELPSTAR: Thanks for making me aware of DisplayPort - I'll certainly go in that direction!

Matt,
Thanks for the assurance: I'll look into the DisplayPort-to-HDMI cable as you and Helpstar suggested.
