I bought a 360 after my ASUS A7N8X Deluxe build died at the end of last summer (I know its old, but it still played a majority of the games I cared about somewhat after a graphics update) in order to play Modern Warfare 2. Played the game on someone else's 360 and just had to have it, so I did.

Coming up (Fall '10) I will be getting a grant from my school in order to purchase a computer (500 grant/500 loan). I plan on spending all and a little more for another system that will last a while, and play the games I want.

My only concern with building another computer is the rampant cheating I hear about from my friends who own the PC copy of MW2 (specifically)

I played CS from when it was a mod, and although hacking was annoying, it wasn't as widespread as from what I've heard.

TL;DR

Is cheating/hacking in PC multiplayer is bad as I have been lead to believe? I miss a mouse and keyboard, and want to build a computer and demote my 360 to media center, but is it worth it?

cheating is a problem in modern warfare 2 because you can't choose which servers you wish to play on. one hundred percent of the time the game dumps you in a random laggy server with no admin.

modern warfare 2 is a console game.

anything without dedicated server support is a console game tbh.

Console versions have "cheats" too - quite often you will find someone that has spent half their life looking for glitches to get outside of maps or on top of items that in the real world would be impossible.

PC gaming is made worse by the fact that a lot of games can be "modded" by the gaming community - in particular to add / change items used in gameplay.

Its a sad fact that anyone that buys a game for any platform feels that they need to cheat to win games etc. why pay £30 for a game then blatantly cheat

Modern Warefare 2 is just polluted with cheaters that use hacked apps like aimbot and such. No dedicated servers means no admins to police anything, and Activision really doesn't seem to care about the PC community to even attempt to counter the hacked apps. They made most of their money on the consoles and it was basically a complete port to the PC with no effort to make it friendly for us. It took the PC modding/cheating community no time to take what they had for COD4 to MW2 because it's the SAME engine. I bought it only because there was a missprint in a Best Buy add for 29.99. The single player was fun but short, and the Spec Ops were fun. But Multiplayer has TO many kill streaks and to many annoying pop-ups. I played it for 2 months and gave up because of the cheaters.

I've been Playing Bad Company 2 since a week after it came out and there are very few hackers. The games run on dedicated servers and many clan servers are really policed well. I think one time I've really felt like someone was definitely cheating along with a few others and it seemed to be their clan server, so they aren't about to kick themselves off. But other than that it seems good. You will have cheaters in any game, console or PC. PC just opens it up to modders, as mentioned before.

Modern Warefare 2 was an EPIC FAIL for the PC.
2010 games should ALL support at least DX10 or above. DX9 games are just a cheap port from the console version. At least Bad Company 2 has DX9,10, & 11 support. It really makes things look good on the PC, FAR better than any console version.

What they ^ said about MW2.

Cheating in general in PC gaming vs Console gaming; There's a few ways to look at it. It's probably easier to do in PC gaming but it's also easier to avoid and possibly even easier to detect.
As far as more common; % wise probably on the PC but obviously there are more console players so in terms of total numbers it's probably the console that has more. Going back to what I said above about being easier to avoid on the PC it's probably easier to stay away from that % that cheat on the PC than it is to stay away from the volume of console cheaters. That's because PC games generally allow for more selectivity in online gaming whereas consoles are more likely to do the matching up for you.

I'm probably a bit PC biased but in reality I don't care too much about cheating in these games. Unless it's really bad or to the point that I can't enjoy the game at all I don't worry about it. If I'm having fun I really don't care if somebody else is cheating to get a slightly better score. So unless it's blatantly obvious I don't even think about it because my experience has been that people worrying about cheating can ruin a game just as much - or even more so - than the actual cheating.

I can see both sides of the "port" argument mentioned above. Yes games companies will where possible port their games from one platform to another - it makes sense financially, however it is not without its problems.

However, and this is where PC gaming is fading fast - gaming on any console is easy, stick the disc in and away you go. The Pc on the other hand is a different beast - yes you can play with a low spec PC (CPU or GPU), but the gaqme will work better on a higher spec CPU or GPU - even then (MS are you listening ... FSX) there are cases where the recomended spec isnt good enough to run games without graphics glitches etc. The only choice is another £XXX on a new CPU or GPU - which is why console gaming thrives. The cost of the necessary hardware for a PS3 or Xbox 360 means the game will work the same for every user, so of course games will more than likely be written with a console in mind - and more than likely ported.

To get back to the original point of "cheats" and modders... well the lack of dedicated servers cant really be held to account, and to be fair how much play testing do you devote to a game before publishing ? Cahnces are they could have hundreds or thousands of man hours testing and someone will still find a glitch. All games companies need to take proper notice of gamers complaints about the flaws that allow glitchers and cheaters and patch the game accordingly.

My own personal view is if I spent £20 - £45.00 on a game I couldnt justify the price IF all I was going to do was to cheat to achieve a higher score or kill ratio than someone else. It defeats the point of playing the game in the first place.

I think there is a BIG difference between glitches and cheating. glitches are issues in a game that you can exploit. Sure they are annoying, but every game has them. Cheaters/hackers(not really hackers because they just download someone elses app) purposely do so in order to kill more people in a FPS at least or gain an advantage. I still don't know why anyone would cheat. They must really be HORRIBLE with their actual skill to need to do this. I like to think of myself as moderately good, but it just frustrates me when I can see someone blatantly cheating. How fun can it really be if you know where everyone is in a map and your computer does the aiming for you? Really? And I have a feeling most of these people are kids. I think most adult have a better sense of accomplishment and would keep playing so they actually get better.

I wonder how many cheat because they think they are leveling the playing field because they think everybody else is cheating? I've been in so many games where people accuse each other of cheating even when they have no reason to - "You killed me, you must be cheating".

That's why like I said I worry very little about cheating unless it's something that actually disrupts gameplay. But whether somebody is using an aimbot or is really just that good I could care less.

I've run into lots of people who were cheating "because *that* guy is cheating, I'm just making it fair."

Both get banned.

And I'd say there's probably more cheating on PC, but if a game has dedicated servers, many of them are very well policed. Add them to your favorites list and play away!

I've also found it's much more fun to play with the same people, you build relationships* and have more fun.

*Just friendly people you get to know a little, not best friends, dates, etc.

In addition to the above...... when you can serve games using your own server and if you can make mods that separate your server from everybody else, that makes the game more fun. And I would say that PC gaming has a better edge because if you can buy the hardware you get a better graphics experience over a console because you're stuck with whatever "junk" they put inside.

Look, I love CoD ... but I've only played it on the 360

My buddy played it on my 360, then bought it for PC, and was sad.

My big question was,...

Is it still worth it to buy a PC for gaming (what I REALLY REALLY want to do), or should I just keep my 360?

I love OC'ing, bleeding edge graphics, but if the tradeoff is cheaters...

oh, by the way..... a "glitch" is something that EVERYONE can do, that fucks over people, not "cheating" which to me is a mod/ aimbot w/e that will do *** FOR YOU.

saw plenty of cheating in cs/cs:s, but people would get server banned/kicked...

I want to buy a new comp (5870 etc) to kick games asses, play them, but still have fun

I don't want to deal with the cheaters out there that feel that it's "cool" to cheat

I play PC games period. I still play on the kid's Wii (mainly Rockband), but any FPS type shooters, PC is the way to go. Oh, and I myself just picked up BF:BC2 lastnight and all I can say is, it looks SO much better than any console game. In fact, they had MLB2K10 on a PS3 on a 40+" screen and wow, it looked UGLY! I mean, jaggies EVERYWHERE. Nowhere near the clarity of say BF:BC2 and I'm playing it on full specs. Unfortunately, I can only play it at 1280x1024 due to my monitor as well as my GPU, but still, the look of the environments, characters, everything looks crystal clear on my PC compared to what you see on a console game. Consoles "cheat" to make things look good, but when you put a lot of these games on large screen LCDs, they look like utter crap sometimes. Other times, they've done things to make it look good, but it still doesn't touch what a PC can do.

Don't worry about the cheaters except for COD 6 just look at VALVe VAC ban system works great.

Precisely, Console games may not have "hacks" in the traditional sense, But people always seem to find exploits to abuse. Sure everyone can abuse those exploits, but then it becomes who is the best exploiter not who is the best at playing the game the way it was intended to.

The NHL series is notorious for this. NHL10 has pretty much become who can glitch the most. Thats one among many glitches and exploits in that game. I.e. theres ways to exit the game without losing. If you quit the game (even if you get the loss) it prevents your opponent from getting points for the win. So out of spite in the dying minutes of the game, someone can just quit and rob you of the points.

The glitch shots, exploits like just holding the puck in your own zone and playing keep away if your opponent is on the power play, its impossible to get the puck from them. Doing the same thing as the PP exploit, for an entire period to maintain a lead. Or if your opponent has the puck and just stops moving altogether, its nigh impossible to get the puck for some reason and 9 times out of 10, either you or a cpu player will take a penalty trying to get the puck from him.

So yes, just because there arent blatant hacks does not mean people wont utterly ruin a game by exploiting glitches.

The whole point is ruining the game, not whether someone is using a cheat you dont have access to. I mean really I play NHL to cycle the puck, set up plays, i.e. play the better hockey game. Not a game of who can do the most ludicrous things that would never happen in a hockey game, it pisses me off just as much when im forced to exploit back to compete. 95% of the games I play online in NHL people exploit that is just annoying as hell when i want to play a legit game.

At least in a PC FPS, its maybe one or two hackers in a a game with 32 people present. (COD mw2 is a dead end since there are no dedi servers, and no real anti cheat system) BFBC2 isnt bad at all from a hacker standpoint, sure they are there, But I rarely encounter them.

Again does it ruin the fun of a game any less, when everyone is doing something the game never intended to get an edge? Its still annoying as piss for those who have a sense of fair play.

As for my above example, I want to play NHL 2010, not who can exploit a game the most 2010.
