PC will not boot - Black screen after splash screen

I've been running into some problems with my PC lately in regarding bootup.

Completely randomly, a week or two ago I switched my computer on and it gave me an 'insert bootable media' error. After restarting a couple of times and checking boot order, i still gotthe error but booted into a recovery drive and although it was not apparently able to fix my startup problem, on reboot it booted back into windows.
On next boot after that however and ever since then it loads into the motherboard splash screen just after bios and then either loads forever before black screening or promptly black screening. Whenever I try to boot from other devices it black screens and I have checked boot priority, reset bios, reset cmos and reseated most hardware components to no avail. Sometimes at random times it boots and says 'preparing automatic repair' before black screening again. Any ideas?

My specs are:

Windows 8.1
Asus A88xm plus mobo fm2+
Amd Athlon x4 860k
8gb crucial ballistix sport RAM
Sapphire Amd Radeon R9 270x
WD Blue 1TB HDD

Put in your windows installation disc or USB and boot to it

Open system repair and open a command prompt

Type in
Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

Now reboot and see if anything changes
