Hey guys,

Recently I've been struggling with an issue with my now 4 year old PC. I've had some problems with my PC crashing before, to weird striped lines, which i RMAed my GPU for to no avail (was returned to me as it was). These issues persisted and I'm now stuck in the current circumstance.

My PC won't boot with my GPU power leads plugged in (if i just have it in the PCI slot with one of the leads in the pc will boot but no GPU output). All of the components appear turn on (fans spinning on GPU, Case, CPU etc), however my keyboard and mouse do not appear to be receiving any power. Without the GPU plugged in, the computer function completely normally, running through the integrated graphics. I have tried:

  • Resetting the BIOS
Testing each stick of RAM individually
    Re-seating the GPU
The weird thing is that this happened a month or two ago, and it just started randomly working again after about a week. I'm unsure if maybe my PSU is now failing and does not have enough wattage to boot my PC, as it is only 550W and 4 years old for what is a fairly power-hungry card. Or perhaps it is the GPU that has failed, though its unlikely as I'm sure it is related to the persistent issue I have had with this machine. Any input would be appreciated. I also do not really have any other PC's available for testing for the moment. Wondering if I should just get a new PSU and find out.

Specs:

  • i5 4570
    Sapphire 280x Vapor-X 3GB
    16GB DDR3 RAM
    GIGABYTE B85M-D3H
    FSP AURUM S 550W

Solution
Over the course of 4 years the PSU has taken a good hit since the R9-280X regardless of what model it is, will require the entire system to draw about 600W. The issues you've stated is evident that your PSU is failing. In fact I'm certain that the card might have ended up being damaged as you've stated that you were dealing with the lines from the get go - which in essence was artifacting due to lack of power to the GPU.

You should try and work with a higher wattage, reliable unit from a friend or neighbor and see if the system powers up when breadboarded.

The fsp aurum was a mediocre unit back in the day and over a 4 year timespan has most likely worn out. What you are describing sounds like damage/power starvation from the psu. Replace it with a quality 500W+ model and you should be good to go again.
