Okay, I'll try to make this straight forward and accurate.

Basics, z190 motherboard, Nvidia 970 graphics card, intel processor. Age of pc 1.5 years.

As of three days ago it worked fine, slightly less then how it used to perform, I presumed age and number of programs I typically had on it. It crashed during a game of league (not system demanding. I rebooted and only one monitor (non hdmi port, d -sub) turned on. I finished my game with a fair amount of choppiness and a very odd screen resolution that I could not hit fix. After I shut down, unplugged, and attempted to diagnos. CPU fan wasn't working (was normally quite and I hadn't noticed until this point, unknown how long) and the area was very hot. Replaced CPU fan. Went to re boot, only one monitor still, blue screen occurred multiple times well trying to figure things out. Looked like a bad graphics card (no idea why this happens out of the blue). Tried to take it out, checked all power cables, and reinstalled it (previously uninstalled and re installed drivers with no luck). Came on, monitor was working, normal resolution, at this point it crashed again. Would not re boot. Hard drive was making a clicking noise can not reset pc or anything. Essential questions.
1) What can I do to test my pc? (Can run bios that is it, what should I look for?)
2) What should I attempt to replace?(the entire unit or what?)
3) How are these things related to each other? (I.e. How did a heating up processor lead to a graphics card failing to my entire system dying?)
4) What should I do differently in the future?
5) is this normal for a pc of this age? (I don't believe so but want to confirm before I draw any conclusions)
Thank you whoever is able to help with these questions, I appreciate the assistance.

1)since you can go into your bios go look at your cpu temps would be a good start and if you have like MSI AFTERBURNER and a benchmark to test your gpu and see what your CPU and GPU temps are while its running. if you have a CPU benchmark run it see what your temps are as well.

2) if you have another GPU to plug into your MOBO that will help you tell if its your GPU... if it still happens you can take out the GPU as the problem

3) when your gaming you do use some of your CPU.... depending on the game like BF1 or mass effect Andromeda, or watchdogs 2, they will use ALOT more of the CPU than the GPU

4) if you fried your CPU i would recommending of getting something better than the stock air cooler (ALMOST ANYTHING IS BETTER)

5) ive have 3 computers than are over 2 years old that i built. and 2 7 year old computers that ive built that are still running.

i hope i got everything in one post for your

(EDIT) it would be great to know your full specs on your computer

blue screens and clicking noise is the sign of a failing hard disk.
blue screen could be a sign of a thermal damaged cpu (unlikely)

first thing i would suggest is removing the power and sata data cables from the hard disk and seeing if it goes beyond bios and gives you the message about no boot device found .

i'd be surprised if it is your gpu as you're getting a display but it's best to rule it in or out as the above poster suggests .

CPU temps (note I already installed a new CPU fan) 20c, MOBO 20c, when booting without HD hooked up screen reads (the system cannot find any boatable devices). Could my hard drive going bad have corrupted my GPU's drives?

Full system specs, z190 pro gaming motherboard. Intel(r) i7-6700k CPU @4.00 GHz, 8gb ddr4. New CPU cooling fan corsair h80i v2. Power source 80 plus bronze. HDD SATA6G_1 toshiba. Not sure what other specs would be, haha. Also thanks to both people for the help so far, I thought everything was done for but you guys have given me hope.

its not your HD
not your CPU
your temps are fine
your getting 20c on your CPU!?!( i have a custom loop and im getting 27c at idle and 33% at 100% load) id like a screen shot of your bios where it says your cpu temp
have you tried a new cable to the other monitor or pluged it into another port on the GPU
as well as ONLY having the cable thats pluged into the monitor that has a blue screen and reboot the computer and see if it turn on(probaby wont)
that port on the GPU might of went out

would your computer boot beyond bios before you removed the HDD ? the impression i got was that you couldn't boot beyond bios .

let's be sensible here! first of all connect your monitor to your onboard gpu and not the dedicated gpu. ( connect to the motherboard )

Hey guys, just a bit of an update, I tried everything you guys had suggested and was able to identify it as the hard drive having failed. I replaced it with a Samsung evo 850 ssd yesterday and since then no crashes. I appreciate all the help as I had really thought my entire pc was done for but you'd guys were really helpful with everything, thanks!

False success story, it is not fixed. Ran fine for half a day but when I actually used it today it stopped working. I played one game of LoL and it worked fine but my mouse was jumping which has never happened before. After that I triend another game (Albion online) and it crashed again. At this point it can't be the hard drive, the graphics card under the Furmakr test crashes, but it also crashes without my graphics card being in, although the fur test doesn't cause it to crash at that point. I tried running all 8 threads and 4 cores for my CPU and that did not cause it to blue screen of death so I don't think it's the CPU. Honestly I'm close to just taking it to a shop because it seems like a lot suddenly started going bad....
