I put my computer to the sleep mode (NOT hibernate) and left it for more than two hours. Then there was a power loss and PC wasn't powered for quite some time but when i booted it up again, after seeing BIOS logo, it got stuck on that black screen seemingly trying to return to its previous state and eventually it did! How can this be explained if Ram is supposed to lose all the information after a power loss?

RAM is volatile - it does loose information when power is lost.

(Which is a good reason for having auto-save etc. turned on when working on important documents, etc.. If power is lost you will only lose document changes made after the most recent save. And regular backups should always be an on going effort.)

Anyway, the computer also stores basic startup information that is protected from loss via the CMOS battery.

You can easily find other similar links and explanations.

Just as a matter of practice, I recommend that you install a new fresh CMOS battery.
