I3 2100 to i5 3470

Your i3 is a sandy bridge based CPU. The i5 is an ivy bridge based CPU. That doesn't mean it won't work, but we need to check that your motherboard and memory is compatible with the i5.

What motherboard are you using? Which BIOS version (if will need to reinstall the i3 if you need upgrade the BIOS)?
What memory are you using?

the motherboard is a standard lenovo one. (lenovo 9qkt39aus)
bios version 2.6
Ballistics 8GB RAM 1333Mhz

the computer is an lenovo m71e, i cant find the motherboard name

Highly likely the BIOS of that board does not support that CPU. you can check Lenovo's website to see if they ever offered any BIOS updates for that motherboard, and if they did that will do it. Otherwise that board simply doesn't have the microcode to run it. If there is no BIOS update there is no solution to this other than getting a new motherboard.

EDIT: This is the last BIOS update I could find for that board

No mention of processor support microcode updates. This is not going to work for you.

can i go for the i5 2500? that seems closest to the 3470. would that work with my motherboard

damn i was looking forward to this cpu too.
thanks for your help
ill get the i5 2500 then
