Specs :

Motherboard : Asus P8z77-v LX
Ram : 2 x 8 gb Hyperx Savage
Cpu : Intel core i7 3770 quad core 3.4Ghz
Gpu : Built in graphic ( motherboard or cpu ? )
PSU : Cooler Master B700 W

Right, so I decided to upgrade from my i5 3570 to an i7 3770. I built the pc myself and with the i5 installed everything is ok, pc boots, bios, the lot. I then replace the cpu and put in the i7 and the pc is "dead". It starts up and shuts down after a second, it then boots up but i get no signal to my monitor, and therefore no bios. I have tried to pull out the CMOS battery and put it back in again, i have taken ram out, repositioned it and I have updated the bios and every Intel update imaginable ( with the I5 in place ). Basically I'm running out of options here, I'm a big noob so I don't know very much about pc's but I find it strange that the pc works fine with the i5 and not with the new i7. Any help would be deeply appreciated. Thank you

Update : With the i7 in place all the fans are running and the motherboard has a green light, no red light for the ram. The tower case I bought didn't have a speaker built in so I can't hear any beeps....

Would be good to get a speaker to find out what exactly the error is, could be a faulty CPU...

Also, try using the exact BIOS version that adds supports specifically for the i7-3770, I've seen a few cases here at tom's where people had to actually downgrade their bios to the version that introduced support for their CPUs.

Hey, Thanks for answering. I found a speaker on my old pc but of course it didn't work 🙁 Anyway, does it make a difference if I download bios update with the i5 in place ? I mean, what I really want is an update for the i7 but I cant use my pc with that cpu in place... Probably a stupid question but what can I say, I'm no expert :)

Update : I put the i5 back in and lo and behold, the speaker went beep ( just the short normal beep ). I also checked the right bios number on the asus website and the right version for the i7 is v.2501, and then I checked what version that's installed and it's..... 2501 🙁

Well actually is supported since first release BIOS 0312 so it can't be a BIOS incompatibility issue...

So the speaker won't even beep with the i7 in place? very likely the CPU is making a short-circuit thus even preventing POST to operate, seems to me it's a dead cpu, but maybe someone else has another opinion.

Nope, no beep with the i7 in place... I think there's something wrong with the cpu as well, when I think about it the package it came in looked like it had been opened before, maybe someone else had the same problem as me and sent it back, and then they sold it to me... All I know is that I've had enough for today, need to get some sleep too. Thanks a lot for helping out and if anyone else have any suggestions on what might be wrong please do share :)

Hey Benny, I know this thread is almost 4 years old, but I'm having exact same issue as you. I had i7-3770 paired with the same motherboard as yours (ASUS P8Z77-V LX) since 2013 and it has been running great. Until on Wednesday 31st October 2018, I press the power button and guess what? It turned on for 2 seconds, then switches off for 3 seconds and then turns on but no POST, keyboard or mouse are not responsive. But the fans and LED lights are still on. Exactly what you have just said. Swapped with an old i3-2120 and it booted fine.

I assume it's the CPU but before I buy the same CPU off eBay, have you found the problem yet or it is 100% dead CPU? Because the CPU still heats up, so somethings must be preventing it to boot to prevent CPU damage. Please do let me know if possible, thank you.

That's not exactly the same problem. The previous poster was upgrade, you had an existing functional PC that suddenly *stopped* working, which is a very large difference.

Rather than necro an ancient thread to ask advice from a specific poster who hasn't contributed in Tom's in four years, start a new thread and list all your specs, including exact power supply.
