Question PC won't boot from any drive (including USB) after BSOD ?

I was having some problems with my PC where Explorer would crash every 10 minutes or so, started 2 weeks ago. It got worse and worse and started crashing every 2 minutes today. During one crash I finally got a BSOD but PC wouldn't shut down. I did hard restart with the power button and now nothing will boot.

My main nvme SSD just says "preparing automatic repair" and hangs at the loading screen with the startup logo (MSI logo) and the circular loading dots. If I try booting through USB, using a Win 11 boot I just confirmed works on a separate PC, it hangs at a loading screen with the same circular dots but a Windows logo instead. I tried:

  • CMOS Reset using the two pins on the mobo and it confirmed it reset the BIOS.
  • I tried reseating the RAM, only plugging in 1 stick, and trying different slots.
  • I tried unplugging all peripherals.
  • Unplugged all SATA drives.
  • Unplugged GPU and tried launching through onboard HDMI.

Nothing has worked. I'm stuck with infinite loading loops no matter what. Cannot launch into safe mode and Windows Diagnostic thing does not even show up. It's stuck basically on the same screen you would usually hit DEL to launch bios.

I believe the BSOD error was the same one that came up when I was testing CPU overclocking months ago, but not 100% sure. The CPU has never crashed once since I setup the OC though and I wasnt doing any extensive tasks when it happened, but the PC was super laggy at the time as explorer was crashing once again.

What options do I have left? Was the explorer crashing some kind of malware that destroyed my CPU? All hardware still shows up in BIOS with correct descriptions.

Could use any help. Thanks in advance.

PSU: make, model, wattage, age, condition (original to build, new, refurbished, used)?

History of heavy use for gaming, video editing, or even bit-mining?

Take a look in Reliability History/Monitor and Event Viewer.

Either one or both tools may be capturing some error codes, warnings, or even informational events related to the described problems.

Power down, unplug, open the case.

Clean out dust and debris.

Verify by sight and feel that all connetors, cards, RAM, jumpers, and case connections are fully and firmly in place.

Inspect for signs of damage: bare conductor showing, cracks, pinched or kinked wires, melting, loose or missing screws, browned or blackened areas, swollen components, sagging brackets, etc..

Overall, increasing numbers of problems and varying problems is a sign of a faltering or failing PSU.

Look for the error codes. The error codes may or may not be directly helpful but will serve as a starting point.

On a working machine put a copy of memtest86 on a flash stick.
Make sure the stick boots and runs.
Connect the stick to the problem machine and see if it will boot and run with no errors.
