I have a couple of external harddisks that are connected to my PC through USB 2.0 and 3.0

However, sometimes.. when I boot up my pc.. it freezes at the splash screen of my motherboard..
Untill I disconnect those devices .. and then it resumes booting...(i dont even have to restart my PC)

It's not always, but it happens and I would like to know why this is. Is there any way to bypass these devices in a bios setting? Im running a Designare X399 Gigabyte mobo..

This is caused by the BIOS looking at the USB ports, and trying to figure out what is plugged into them.

My Gigabyte motherboard (Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Gaming 5) has an option for "Rapid Boot", which does NOT scan the USB ports while waking up. Only when Windows boots, does it look for extra USB drives. Perhaps your motherboard has a similar option.....

I had that problem with an old ASRock motherboard --- no amount of fiddling with BIOS settings mad any difference.

So I just made sure that my external drives' USB leads were unplugged, booted my PC, then plugged externals back in when Windows was up & running.

You could alternatively use sleep mode instead of shutting down, that would get around the problem too.

I tend to use sleep mode all the time now --- only shutting down when I'm going to be away for a few days or when a Win 10 update requires a restart.

Hey guys,

Thank you for your answers

Boot priority is correct, so that's not the problem.
I think i will have to go with that rapid boot solution then, i will look for this option on my motherboard.

Or if that doesnt work.. Ill use sleep mode..

thanks again!
