hey everyone,

i've seen people with similar problems but none of their solutions seemed to fix mine.

i just acquired a second hand gpu that may or may not be DOA.

whenever i plug it into my pc it will either not boot, sometimes constantly restarting itself every three seconds. there are no sounds from the hard drives, alle the fans however start working, the gpu and cpu even run at full speed (the led's in gpu also turn on, it's a reference nvidia card) there will be no image, since apparently, the pc never even enters bios.

i would like to point out that the system works fine with my older gigabyte windforce r9 290

things i have already tried:
- completely deleting all nvidia and amd programs and drivers
- clearing CMOS
- reinstalling ram sticks

the pc also worked fine with a gtx 1060 3GB that i had a while back
i'm just curious weither all this points at a software or a hardware problem perhaps.

my specs:
- msi p67gd65 b3 (running latest bios 4.3)
- i5 2500k @4.5ghz
- arctic freezer 33 cpu cooler
- corsair VS550 PSU
- samsung 840 EVO ssd
-1TB seagate hard drive
- 2x4gb corsair 2133mhz ram

my old gpu that works: gigabyte windforce r9 290

new one that won't allow my pc to boot: asus GTX 980 reference model

thanks to all of you for any advice,
kindest greetings

Solution
Hardware problem with the new card. If the PC can no longer POST when only the GPU changes then the only things you can do are update your BIOS and try reseating the card a few times.

I'd just return the 980 GTX and say it doesn't work. When installed the card is supposed to work out of the box 100% before Windows is loaded. Drivers and software are out of the picture before Windows loads. You should not have to do anything to your BIOS if it works with a 1060GTX. The 980 GTX sounds like a lemon. You could try it in another PC to confirm.
Sounds like a bad GPU. If it was a software problem. It would occur once the OS started loading. As your computer won't POST. The failure is occurring very early on.

As other GPU work. That points to the GTX 980 at fault. I'm assuming you remembered to plug the PCIe power cable in. Since the R9 290 works.
