PC Won't Boot

A few weeks ago I got all my parts in for my PC and it booted up, no problems. This is how I learned my hard drive wasn't any good, so I replaced the hard drive. When I installed the new HDD.. it wouldn't boot up. I would hit the power button, the fans would spin for a few seconds, and then slowly spin off. So, .. I sent my motherboard back to Newegg.com and got a replacement.

It got here today, so I hooked everything back up.. and same issue, but the fans spin for a shorter amount of time maybe a second and won't boot.

I decided to pull my graphics card and try again.. when I powered on.. there was a spark along the power connector to the motherboard with some smoke. I'm not sure from where, but I think it came from the 24-pin connector.

Case: Antec 300
CPU: AMD 955 Black Edition
Motherboard: ASRock 880GM-LE FX
Power Supply: Corsair Builder Series CX600 V2 600W
Graphics Card: XFX HD-6770 1GB DDR5
HardDrive: Western Digital Cavier Blue 500GB
RAM: 8GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600

Everything BUT the CPU is brand new.

Any ideas?

Thorny one. Sounds like a serious short on the board. If you have a multimeter check the main rails rom the PSU with everything disconnected.

If it survived check all connections inc. CPU for bent pins and signs of heat/ burning. Connect up a bit at a time starting with the mobo, CPU + fan, memory sticks etc. Leave your multimeter leads in place on the 12v rail, and if it dips suddenly at any time you switch on, remove power immediately and try to find out why. Doesn't sound too good, but there must be a shorted pin somewhere...

I don't have a multimeter. I've just got in contact with Newegg, I'm getting a refud on my motherboard. I don't know what the problem is, but I'm giving up. It's been a work in progress for four months and I'm pretty much out of almost $400. Thanks for trying to help.

There doesn't appear to be any bent pins - as far as I can see - but I did take my power supply out, hook it up to an old Intel Motherboard/CPU (using an old dell case power button/power button cable) and it came on just fine, didn't stop a few seconds later.

Its a start! At least you appear to have a psu. Bent pins apart, I can't see the CPU causing that kind of problem. Possibly a short from mobo to case? Me, I would search ebay for,say, an Asus board which would support the AMD and try that. I have a M4A78LT which I got for about £30 ($50?) and it supports 4 955s mebbe not the Black.

GPU should be OK, it wasn't there when you got the spark but be prepared to chop the power in a hurry if you suspect anything next time...if the fans stop, hit the off switch!

I was thinking it could be a short from the mobo to case, also. I'm just stuck on where to go. If I buy another motherboard, I risk the same thing happening again. Don't care to piss away more money, you know?
