PC won't detect GPU?

Hi so I've tried loads of different things here... Basically my GPU (Sapphire AMD r9-290) lights up and one of the fans spin when my machine boots but Windows and my BIOS doesn't detect it? I'm using a MSi Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard on Windows 8.1 and Corsair CX750M PSU (750W seems to be more than enough for the build I have)

It's weird because even in the BIOS I didn't see an option to disable integrated graphics.

I've installed drivers from Sapphire's website, I've updated all the other drivers on the MB including the BIOS, it just seems weird to me that the machine won't detect it. I've plugged it into one of my PCIe slots and the power cable is directly from the PSU into the graphics card.

When I first installed the GPU I thought it was working and didn't realise until recently that it wasn't, I was really confused when I used a HDMI cable from the GPU to the monitor I have and it wasn't detecting a signal but I guess I have my answer about that now.

This is my first build by the way and this seems to be the last issue I'm having with it and it's a pretty big one, am I just making a simple mistake?

Make sure that the card is inserted fully into the pci-e socket. Also, try reconnecting the power cords into the GPU. Do the same with the cords going from the PSU.

The power cord into the GPU is the same as the one coming from the PSU, is there meant to be another one??

Okay so I think I realised my mistake but still having issues...

I only had 1 8-pin power cable plugged into the GPU and it was coming straight from the PSU. So I used another 8pin cable and put that into the GPU and on the other end there are two white 4-pin ends (both female) so I plugged another cable from the PSU and used 2 ends of it to go into the two 4-pin bits and put the GPU back into the PCIe slot...

Unfortunately when I did that, when I booted the PC, nothing came up on the screen whether I plugged it in from the GPU or the VGA display port from the motherboard itself. I messed about with the monitor setting and still it would not detect anything??

Update: When I unplugged the second 8-pin from the GPU, it detected my motherboard VGA again... Still won't detect my GPU HDMI

Try using another one of the ports on your GPU- one other than HDMI. Maybe it's just a problem with the specific HDMI port...
