when i click start>shutdown>restart, just in advance i've already cleared my CMOS. your help would be much appreciated, i am really really stuck. thankyou.

the power stays on it does not boot back up, i have a gigabyte S-Series H55M-S2V motherboard, thanks for your reply :)

i have 730w new psu my motherboard has an automatic update for BIOS & when i update it says the version you have is newer than the update do you want to continue, so i dont know what to do. thanks for your reply :heink:

Can you confirm you are win7 (or say your windows version)

When you power-on boot after a failed restart do you see the message "Windows failed to start..."

Do you know if the system is hanging on shutdown when you ask it to restart, or hanging after it shuts down and before it can reboot? -- Can you post what messages you see? Do you see BIOS messages? Windows splash message? etc.

Is this a new build that never was able to restart, or did the lack of restart appear recently ? (many device driver problems can hang restart both on the way down and on the way back up)

Can you remove all USB and firewire external devices and see if restart now works ?

Yes Windows 7 ultimate 64bit, my pc's a year old but ive just installed a730w psu & Asus Radeon HD 7970, it was working to a few days ago, i don't get any messages. When i restart it shuts down but hangs i think, i can still hear the fans & have to manually press the restart key on the tower for it to boot back up thankyou :??:

I've updated the BIOS but it did'nt solve the problem, my computer's not even beeping when it boots up, how can i check that there's enough power, ps would a fresh windows install solve the problem? thanks.

Did it restart OK after you installed the HD7970 (nice card!) or has it failed since the PSU/7970 install ?

There are not that many 7970s out there. I suggest you uninstall (clean uninstall if that makes sense) the 7970 driver and reboot with the standard VGA driver. (no you can't game that way, this is diagnostic). Try a restart with the 7970 running off the VGA driver? Does it work ? Either way download a new driver package from AMD (win7 64-bit) and install while you are running the VGA driver. AMD will clean up a lot of things. Does it now restart ?

I will try this thankyou & i will let you know.

Tried in VGA restarted the pc & it locked up on the shutdown screen, will try with the amd driver. Dont know whats going on,thanks.

thanks for your help.
