PC won't recognize Xbox 360 wireless controller adapter.

Hello,
I have been messing with this for days, I made sure I got the latest 64-bit driver for my authentic 64-bit copy of windows. The controller will pair wirelessly with the adapter, but when I plug the adapter into my back USB ports (any of them), windows fails to recognize the device. I am told to go select a driver manually (even after installing the driver), and it does not work with or show any driver version. I have tried installing (multiple times) both the bundled cd 64-bit driver, and the latest 64-bit driver from Microsoft.com. Nothing works. I get to the point where The driver puts the overlay up to show how many controllers, and what controllers are connected, but when the adapter plugs in, Windows immediately makes a short "two ding" sound (like "din-din"), and there's a symbol with a red "x" in the system tray. Windows troubleshooting fails to fix anything (no surprise there). I can't find anything on Google either. I really need help because GTA and many other games seem to play very well with the 360 controller.

I've had this problem. You need to find the driver manually, windows has it but doesn't seem to recognize it.
when prompted select driver from list, i can't remember where it is from there but with a bit of trial and error i always seem to find it ...lol ... it will say wireless controller. Hope this helps, if not google it, thats how i found it.

That little information actually helped. Thank you so much! I found it under Windows Common Class C controllers (or something of the like). There it not only had my wireless adapter drivers, but it had multiple versions of it. Plus versions for the wired controller, voice chat via controller, and even play and charge drivers.

one last tip ...leave your receiver plugged in if ya can ... if you boot up without it, it just might decide to loose the drivers and make you remind it where they are again...lol ... has done it to me on a couple of occasions.
