So a couple of weeks ago i installed the latest drivers for my gtx 970, and i noticed that everything was fine except for one game. Everytime I play Dota 2 my pc would completely crash and restart itself, I wasn't sure at this point what the problem was, because for my other games (AC origins, PUBG, ETC) they were all running fine. So I just continued to play dota despite my pc crashing once every game or so. This went on for a couple of times, until finally awhile ago, I played dota again, my pc crashed as usual, but this time, I couldn't boot it up. I'd get to the part where windows loads, but after that, it shows a black screen full of green dots, then my pc would restart, and do the same thing again and again, basically i can never get past the black screen with green dots all over. I took my gpu out, uninstalled the drivers, and then put my gpu back in, then I was able to go all the way through this time. With my gpu plugged in, i reinstalled the latest drivers, restarted my PC and before I know it, I'm back to the black screen with green dots again. Please help me I have no idea what to do at this point 🙁

Update: Attempted to install older drivers: problem not solved. still getting the same results. I noticed that the fans were moving alternatively. One would spin, then the other stops and vice versa.

Solution

Sometimes it does not matter what you play or if you play at all - the card just goes out. The part about going fine without drivers pretty much confirms that GPU is dead.

that suddenly? 🙁 it wasn't even under load when it happened, could it be just a coincidence that it happened while i was playing dota? i doubt dota could be the cause though, since it doesn't demand too much from the gpu. i also tried installing older drivers: same thing happens. basically, i can only get through without any drivers installed. as soon as i install drivers, it goes back to doing the same thing.

i understand. too bad 🙁 i only had this for about 2 years. thanks for the help sir! i'll be waiting for some other responses to see if they've experienced the same thing, my gpu is a zotac, by the way. not sure if that could factor in the relatively short lifespan of my card

Since the fans are moving alternatively I can only suspect the graphics card.Try using it in another PC and see if problem still persists. One cannot be sure about the life of PC components. They can last for several years or might fail in very next moment.
