Hello,
recently I have had an issue with a power surge, and after trying to turn on the PC, it freezed at MoBo splash screen. I rebooted and it past the splash screen right into the black and white screen where it listed all of my hardware and it sait CMOS settings wrong at the bottom. However, it also showed that I had 4GB of RAM installed in the PC instead of 6GB. I then turned off the PC, unplugged everything, opened the case and simply reslotted the existing RAM to other 3 slots (they were slotted in white slots until I reslotted them in blue ones - I have Asrock x58 Xtreme MoBo with 3ple channel slots) and the PC just would not turn on anymore. Everything has clicked well, I know how to install the RAM. The CPU and case fans turn on, as well as the LEDs and nothing else except that. I don't hear HDD clicking, or an optical drive. Then I brought everything back to the white slots and the PC is back to normal. It POSTs, boots the OS and says 6GB of RAM.
The question is what happened to my blue RAM slots and what happened to the 2GB of RAM that went missing in the first place? Do I need to "activate" the blue ones somehow, in BIOS or phisically on the MoBo? They have not been used at all, the RAM was slotted in the white slots since I bought the PC.
Even if my PC is working fine now, and it has passed a 6 hours of Hot CPU tester 4, as well as an hour of Prime95 blend test and Windows 7 integrated memory test, I plan on upgrading my RAM and would like to use the rest of the slots in future. HDD has no bad sectors and it does not make any strange noises or is anyhow slower in operating. No parts are overheating, the PC was cleaned recently and the CPU had a new thermal compound smeared and idles at 35C. I tried clearing the CMOS using jumpers, using the CLR CMOS button and I replaced the battery. I also have the most recent version of BIOS installed properly, have not OC ever on this rig.
