When I plug in the power cord, the psu starts making a high pitch sound. This isn't the first time it happened, before.. If I waited a while the sound would stop and I was able to turn it on. But now it won't turn on at all. I know that all the cables are in the right place, this issue just started a couple weeks ago. I've tried resetting the cmos but to no avail. Also I'm aware that the psu was garbage from the start, it was this 480 watt logisys psu that came with the chassis. However when the power cord is plugged in, the green led light on the mobo turns on. I'm not sure if using this bad psu has damaged any other part of my pc or not, so I don't know if I'll be fine buying a new psu or not. Lastly, this pc is only almost 2 years old. I'm not sure what to do at this point.

Sounds like at least part of the PSU is bad. Get a new one. A good Seasonic unit can be had for $79 on Newegg. Cheaper than killing part of your PC!

Cheap OEM power supplies are a great way for manufacturers to cut costs. Logisys are total crap. Consider yourself lucky it lasted 2 years without popping and catching fire. If you post your complete pc specs we can recommend something for you of good quality in a power range you need.

Anytime that ANY part of your PSU starts making noise, REPLACE IT. PSU's are NOT meant to make any kind of noise.

As Hello man stated, it is VERY likely that part of the PSU went bad on you. You are likely to damage your motherboard or other components by using it.

It is not worth the risk. Replace it, immediately.

In my opinion, the PSU is one of the most important parts of a build. Stay away from weird names without reading reviews. The quality names are Seasonic, XFX and Corsair, sometimes EVGA. Don't look at my sig and think that buying a Rockfish is smart. It's definitely not. I happen to have done my research and found out that the unit I have is safe (long story). Hardware secrets does excellent teardowns of PSUs and testing.

At the time I built this computer I was only 17, and I didn't know much about computers or anything about 80+ . What I noticed when I was shopping, other builds used power supplies with around the same watts.
My build is
Amd FX 41xx 3.8 ghz quad core
Radeon hd 7770
Isn't think anything else matters that much

650W on something 80+ Gold costs you about $79 for a quality unit that is warrantied and won't die. I mean hey, it's the 4th of July where I am, early fireworks!!
