Question PC won't turn on

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I'm not very good at computers! I'm changing my case and motherboard but currently the PC won't turn on at all. So far I've checked:
  • PSU is turned on and plugged into working, turned on socket.
  • 24 pin from PSU is properly connected into motherboard.
How can I deduce whether the problem is PSU or motherboard? Also, do I *have* to connect the wide sata and front panel audio from my case to motherboard/PSU?

Thank you for your patience with my possibly very stupid questions :)

What about the 8-pin (or 4-pin) power connection to the motherboard. Is it attached?

When you swapped the components into the new case, were there any unused mounting points (a.k.a. stand-offs) not used under the motherboard itself?
Yes the 4 pin is attached but just to check, my psu has an 8 pin that I split into 2 4 pins, is it OK to just leave the other not connected?

I think there may be 1 unused standoff under the mobo (it's near the edge so hard to tell) , but if it is underneath, there's no hole in the mobo for a screw there.

If standoffs that don't screw into mobo aren't a thing, then there's no unused standoffs.

Yes, the 4-pin thing is okay.

We need to be clear about the extra stand-off. I understand the motherboard doesn't have a whole for one, as described. But, is there a mount under the motherboard that is coming into contact with the motherboard itself?

If so, that may need to be removed (looks like a little nut than a screw would attach to).

Ah yes there is. To take it off I'd have to take the whole motherboard off tho, I can try that tomorrow. Why is a standoff like that a problem?
