PC100 won't work on a PII 266Mhz board?

Pardon me if this is a silly question. My friend just purchased a 64 MB PC100 stick and tried to install it on his PII 266 Packard Bell mobo. (He didn't ask me first if this would work. Of course I would have told him to use PC66 in that board)
His motherboard is useless now, even with only his old memory installed. No video on screen, nothing...dead.

Can someone explain to me in detail what caused this?
I certainly wouldn't expect PC100 to work on his board, but I'm not sure how his board got fried by it. (And no, he didn't make any physical mistakes during installation such as half-inserted, power still on.....etc.)

If his system used the same physical memory, just clocked down at 66MHz, then there shouldn't be a problem underclocking the memory. If he tried to push his system to go faster than specced, then he may have fried something. Does the system work alright if he goes back to his old memory?

His old memory is (2) 32MB PC66 sticks.

I'm guessing that he might have shorted something when installing the new mem.. maybe tried setting the voltage too high??

I dunno.. but I have PC100 RAM in an old P2L97 (66Mhz FSB) and it works just fine.

Is it OK to mix PC100 and PC66 on the same board.
And, for that matter, PC133 and PC100?

I wear the pants in my household. But my wife seems to be in control of the panties.

your memory suppot in the (pc-66 pc-100 pc-133) is vary dependant on the chipset. however im not sure why your system is dead but the ram wont work on older pc-66 syatems.

nothing special with my system.
an old P2-300 on a GA-686BLX
motherboard.
1 64mb stick of old 66mhz ram, generic
and 2 new sticks of 133mhz, also generic
no problems at all. cept for the occasional
lockup, but that was happening before anyhow.
probably windows
