PCI bandwidth?

I need to add some cheap (PATA IDE) hard drives to a small network server in RAID 1. It's an older mobo and doesn't have SATA. Would it be worth addidng Raptors via a PCI RAID card, or would the fact that they'd be running via PCI limit their advantage? If there's little benefit of raptors over other typical IDE drives then I'll avoid the raptors.

Ok great. Am I thus correct in thinking:

PCI bus: 127mb/s
WD Raptor: 72mb/s
<A HREF="http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/rr1640.htm" target="_new">RocketRAID 1640</A>: 1.5gb/s ???????

The bandwidth listing for the RAID card seems umm... a waste .. I assume I made a mistake somewhere???

I think the difference is:

PCI is 133MB/s (capitol B = Bytes)
RR1640 is 1.5Gb/s (lower-case b = Bits)

That means the RR1640 can still saturate the PCI bus, but not by as much as it seemed.

Firstly, cash (at this kind of amount) is not an issue. I realise this is PCI-X, but that's backwards compatibile with PCI from what I read, right? Also, I realise that on an old system (i.e. one running with just standard PCI) it's overkill and unnecessary. But when I eventually do replace the mobo and get one with pci-x then this card will up its ability also.

Right?

Altho, my X800XT-PE is a year old now, got one of the first ones released and only paid $479 including shipping!!!!
Got it in June of 2004!
