Well, here I am, FINALLY updating my PC. Athlon 64 x2 worked well for the last 10 years, but it's not enough even for web surfing anymore. I'm not going to buy a GPU though, since I'm low on budget and I want to wait for the new generation GPUs, so eather I need to buy an APU or stay with my old... 8600GTS (*sigh*). Anyway, obviously it's PCI-E 1.0 and I wonder if such an old piece of hardware could run stably using PCI-E 3.0 slot on some modern motherboard.

Solution
Well pci ports are reverse compatible-what system build are you going with? If you are planning to go for something like an i5 8400 you are probably better off using integrated graphics.

I was planning to go for i5-8400 if there are no way to use my current GPU, and Ryzen 5 1600 if I could (really want to support AMD at this point).

I need a dedicated card for HD gaming (I haven't played AAA games on PC since like 2012 or something and I really want to), but I also need some platform to browse internet and watch movies before I get one. So I had two options - i5-8400 with Intel HD graphics or Ryzen 5 1600 + the old GPU. I would consider to buy 2600, but in my country the difference in their prices doesn't match the difference in perfomance (I mean, buying a new PC in Ukraine is a quite... VERY expensive thing to do, so every dollar counts).
Ryzen 5 2400G is not an option since after I get a dedicated card I'll stay with a relatively weak processor.

If you can´t afford a new dedicated card for now along with a new system, wait a bit till you can and get all new together. Eventually prices will go down till then too.
For AMD: Eventually you can afford a ryzen 1200 + dedicated GPU now (overclocking the 1200) and upgrade the CPU later (sell the 1200 then)
