Question Pci-e Gen 3.0 component in Gen 4 slot

Reputable
Let's say i have a network card or or ssd that is gen 3, and takes 4 gen 3 lanes.

And i connect it to an x570 board, to the gen 4 slots.

Will i be using 4 lanes, or only 2?

Yes, but pcie gen 4 is twice as fast as gen 3, so having a 2x slower drive on a 2x faster link, would the ssd use only 2 gen 4 lanes, or just make the lanes gen 3?
Again, number of lanes does not change just because the PCIe version changes.

Your three-lane highway is still a three-lane highway even if you're driving a Ferrari instead of your old Toyota Camry.

Still 4 lanes, but it will backwards negotiate to the 3.0 speed.

Effectively you'll have the same bandwidth as 2 lanes of 4.0, but it doesn't change the amount of lanes that are used, they just are slower to conform to the capabilities of the card on the previous PCIe standard.
