I have recently purchased my first M.2 SSD

and an adapter

after connecting it to my motherboard, and about 3 hours playing with bios settings and attempting to get the motherboard to recognise the SSD, i have been unsuccessful, the adapter recognises the SSD is attached (as eviodenced by an LED indicator) but i am unable to find it in the BIOS or in the Hard disk utility or in device manager in windows.
troublshooting so far:
i have currently got the card in a PCI-E 16x slot 3(as in third full length PCI-E slot from the top) but i tried and got the same result in the PCI-E 4x slot
i currently have a GTX-970 in the top PCI-E slot, and i did have a GTX 260 in slot 4 (as a PPU) i have since removed it to no avail. I have tried just about every hard drive setting in the BIOS that would still provide a boot, even removing one of the Hard drives that was using the SATA 3 port (not both due to my OS being on the other)
Im at a loss as to what I am doing wrong please help.
System specs:
win 10 64 bit, Rampage III extreme with intel I7-950 OC to 3.71Ghz, GTX 970 graphics card,D-link DWA-556 Extreme N pci-e network card, 10 GBytes of DDR3 Ram
