PCI-E runs x8 in x16 slot

drivers all updated, latest mobo drivers,bios updated.
my mobo is asus crosshair formula iv and it have 4 pci-e slots and i try to all of them but still the same problem

It would help to know your mobo make and model but one popular Intel stabdard reference design does have two physical x16 slots that only run at x8 with two cards.

i use the first slot.

remove the card and re-seat it in the slot. I had this problem with my motherboard and 6850, re-seating the card fixed it.

My Gigabyte MB shows the same results, but then I have a NON GPU card plugged into the 2nd PCI-e slot.

Do you have a spare card? My board does this also sometimes and the only way that actually works with minimal frustration is to swap the card and boot the machine. It should reset back to 16x and then you can swap again and the slot should still be in 16x.

i have try that with other card and that card run ok at x16,after i reinstall the xfx hd5850 and she still run x8!!!!.So i thing i must test the card with another mobo, maby the card have problem.

Side comment, Not sure But I think there is only a small percentage performance difference between X16 and X8. But that may be running 2 cards ar 8x, x8 vs 16x, 16x.

Yes, mabe the card has problems.

Do you have any other cards in the other two x16 slots?
While normally running the graphics card in the first slot is the preferred method, have you tried running it alone in slot 2?

Note that I agree with the Chief, that card should run just as fast in an x8 slot as an x16 slot - so you should see little real difference. But still it would be nice to have system working at spec.
