Hello!
I am currently planning a case mod, and one of the aspects is that I place the GPU vertically in front of the MOBO. I don't have super high-end components, but I still want to make something cool and unique. My MOBO has 1 x16 slot, 4 x1 slots, and one x16 physical slot that is only running at x4. I've looked through articles and gotten mixed results, so I wanted to get my own answers as to whether or not hooking up my GTX 1060 to the x4 slot (it's lower and therefore would be infinitely easier to work with) would affect gaming and moderate video editing performance more than negligibly.

full specs-
Intel Core i5 6600k (4.5Ghz)
AsRock z170 Fatal1ty Gaming k4
Gigabyte GTX 1060 6gb Xtreme Gaming
8gb G.Skill Ripjaws V

Can't you bench-assemble the components and run some tests?
In the PCIe x16 version 1 days, the x4 slot was a pfs killer. But bandwidth has improved with version 3 to the point that it may not matter with midrange cards; still... the 1060 is a bit above midrange. So. I'd run my own test to be sure.

A lot will depend on the screen resolution you are using too. Higher rez screens will demand more bandwidth from the card than lower rez screens. There are several other variables that may also come into play; the game for instance...
