PCI Express 2.0 16X vs. just 16X

PCI-Express 2.0 is backwards compatible with 1.1.
There are a few exceptions (motherboards that do not work) here and there.
List your specs and power supply so we can verify if your PSU is sufficient.

I just read that the 3870 is not too power hungry. It sounds like it would be very close to my current 1900XT in terms of power usage.

I currently have an Antec 500 TP. I will confirm when I get home.

I am using a DFI LP Ultra-D motherboard.

My psu is an Antec TP 2.0 550W.

Worry not, for that 1900XT will go into a computer I am upgrading for my brother. It is just an opertunistic upgrade for myself. For him, I suspect the 1900XT Will kick some @ss on WoW. He is currently using a 9700 Pro for crying out loud!

Am I correct on the 3870 not using too much more power than a 1900XT?

should work fine although sorry to see you getting rid of the x1900. maybe you can give it to a needy gamer.

*plays a bugle as another x1900xt is put out to pasture*
 , Sorry, couldn't resist. @OP, I'm running a pair of *cough* PCI-e 2.0 cards on a 939 MB with no issues at all, other than the CPU not being able to cope.

The 9700 Pro will likely go into my 4th LAN computer (my wife's) and will kill off the 9500np that is still software modded into a 9700np. And that card has been a favorate of mine all these years as well. :)

But to the other poster above, I assume my S939 X2 CPU running a 2.8GHz can make use of one 3870 as opposed to your CPU not being able to make use of two 3870s.

BTW, I am a NWN2 fan, not WoW.

for the love of god, stop the torture, please don't say you are going to kill off the 9700pro, that is(okay was) a beast of a card. this treatment of old gfx cards must stop, treat them with the dignity they deserve, making a x1900 play WOW and maybe even executing a 9700pro, what has this world come to when crimes like these are being played out.
If it makes you feel better, I know of an E6600 / 8800 320GTS rig that has just been sold for use as a media server.

I know this article is old, and my answer is no but I prefer to ask:
I have a low end pc, and I want to upgrade its GPU.
I want know that can I use one of these GPU with my motherboard?
Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16
GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
Radeon HD 3650 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

My motherboard is MSI 915PL Neo-V which support One PCI Express x16 slot (supports PCI Express Bus specification v1.0a compliant.)
And here is the motherboard special features page http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=915PL_Neo-V&class=mb

Thank you and forgive me for my bad English

I have pretty much the same question.

I have an MSI K9VGM-V with an ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO w/256MB GDDR2 RAM, an Athlon 64 X2 4600+ (running at 2.40Ghz), and 2GB of DDR2 RAM.

I would like to upgrade to an Althon 64 X2 5200+ (running at 2.90Ghz), and maybe an ATI Radeon HD 4650 w/1GB GDDR2 RAM...but I don't know if the newer card will work with my current mobo.

Dude the OP of this thread died while upgrading his new system. He put the card in the slot and he forgot to turn of his PC. It blew up. He couldn't survive after the event.
